top up with formula/EMB?
« on: June 20, 2007, 05:15:28 am »
Hi I have a 16 week old son and I am going to try topping him up with EMB or formula after each breastfeed.  The reason I think I need to do this is because after a breastfeed he can only stay up 1hr 15mins at a push and if I push it longer he gets grizzley and overtired and then takes ages to settle etc.  Yesterday I gave a formula feed just to see if he would settle better and he did.  He stayed up for 2 hours and then slept for 1hr 30mins.  He even self settled.  So I don't want to give up breastfeeding because I love it.  Just wondering how I could top him up with a bottle?  How much formula should I give?  How much formula should I make up in the bottle?  If I make the full 180ml with 6 scoops and he only needs 50 ml that is a waste.  Please can someone shead some light?
Thanks in advance

If you are only topping your lo up with a formula feed after a breast feed I would probably make up about 3-4oz for the first few times to see how much your lo acutally takes.  Over a period of a couple of days you can judge to see how much he is actually drinking, and from there just make up your bottles to the exact amount.

HTH's Keep us posted on how you get on.
