How do I encourage self feeding?
« on: June 20, 2007, 16:35:17 pm »
My 9 month old has been eating chunky foods for 2 months now (along with strained and purees), however he will not feed himself. About 2 months ago, he did try to eat the rice crispies one day from the highchair table when his pincer wasn't even developed yet, and he was able to eat them, but that was it, he won't do it again. His pincer grasp is now developed, but he still won't try eating himself. I always put nutrios on his tray before I start feeding him, and nothing. I also show him by eating them myself, as well as put them in his fingers and try to help guide his hand to his mouth but he will fight to not put it in his mouth. He will even fuss while I'm getting his meal ready to feed him the nutrios from the table.

I am thinking of giving him a cracker to see how he will do with it, but the only thing is that he doesn't have any teeth yet. How would he be able to bite a chunk of cracker? I think this would end up frustrating him, as well as possibly injuring his front gums.

Do babies just all of a sudden 'get it' one day and start feeding themselves? Should I just wait this out or is there something else I can do?

I'm not sure but i think they just get it.  just keep offering.  do you have gerber puffs where you live?  they are small and dissolve easily in LO's mouth.  my LO had to eat those for a while because she didn't get teeth until she was 12 months and so eating solids wasn't really easy for her.

You encourage self-feeding the way you encourage any skill development, offering opportunities, modelling what you want him to do, and letting him get there at his own pace - just like you couldn't make him roll over, or sit unaided before he was ready to, similarly, you can't make him feed himself before he's ready to!

Just continue to model and provide opportunities for him to learn, give lots of praise and positive feedback when he does it, and I'm sure he'll get here in the end!

Not sure where you are....but here in Canada we have Baby MumMums.  Rice cakes that dissolve super fast.  My daughter is 6 mos and I just started the other day with them and she loves them.

Mine started by dipping her little fist on the plate and sucking on it, whilst I fed her with a spoon.  No pincer needed.  The idea of giving him something to dip or  play with that will dissolve easily is a good one, also giving him a spoon and then getting on with your feeding him.  He will dip them one day, if he feels no pressure.  Above all, do not start any feeding battles at all: the little ones always win!
