When can I expect my lo to sleep through?
« on: June 22, 2007, 19:10:49 pm »
My lo is now 5 months and 1 week, she has never been a great sleeper and her naps are very hit and miss.  she still wakes in the night df around 10-11pm and then between 3-4.30 am, she always drinks a full bottle at the mid morning feed and nearly all at her df.  if she does nap well in the day it makes no difference to her night wakings neither does going to bed later or earlier she also wakes at 6,30am which she has stretched as it was always 5,45am thankfully, but i would like to know what i can expect and how we can get there, i am sick of people telling me there baby slept through at 6wks aaarrrggghh!!!!

look forward to your comments
Rachael

Hi there, I have a good routine, with good naps and adequate amounts of food in day but my lo still wakes once at sporadic times, but not hungry, just nosy, so I just accept that that is the way she is for the mo, nothing I can do W2S didn't work and to be honest it does not bother me really as she is not distressed.

Maybe your lo is just waking hungry due to that lovely 6 month growth spurt coming up when most introduce solids? I know they advise waiting until 6 months, so it was just a thought that she may be getting hungrier. If she takes a full feed I would not have thought it was habit, if i try and feed my lo and she is not hungry she just refuses it.

Emma...sorry to be the barer of bad news but no matter what i did with Fin in terms of sleeping/naps, amounts of food, extra snacks etc he would still wake through the night and still does at 11 months old.  I have just accepted the fact that he'll sleep through when he gets to 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to get this alot & to be honest in the end I just let it go in one ear and out the other. Both my girls needed a night feed until they were 8-9 months. I started weaning nightfeeds when solids were more or less established (which for us was 8months - 3 meals). Every baby is different & with Isabella, she kinda dropped the nightfeed herself (she just stopped waking for it) & with Jasmine, I had to do some work.

People might be refering to their baby doing a long stetch at 6 weeks and not literally sleeping the whole night through. My 2yo will still go through nights when she wakes and needs me. I would say she is sleeping through with a 5hr stretch ;)

Hi,

totally agree with pp, i've always been a believer that babies will do it when they are capable of doing 10-12hrs at night, yes we can guide them and help them with a good routine but every baby is differant and will do it when they are developmently and emotionally ready!

I thought my dd would never sleep throught the night no matter what i did nothing worked then one night and 10mths she just started  going from 7-7 and we have never looked back.

i know it seems like they will never do it when we are sleep deprived but it will happen i promise.  JMO

Don't worry, those of us who have been foolish enough to brag (even unintentionally) that their lo slept x hours at x age... live to eat their words.  Everything changes so fast and so often, it's not like the baby hits some developmental watershed and never has nw's again.

I agree with lots on this post! I have 2 kids that are both SO different. Their sleeping couldn't be more opposite- what worked for my dd doesn't work that great for my ds. I could pat/sh for my daughter then eventually pu/pd and by 6.5 mos she slept through the night (most times). And when I say slept thru the night I meant that she slept 8-4. She didn't do 7-7 for another month or so and it was consistent for a month after that!

Now my ds (that I am actually wanting help with on a diff post) is all over the map- started to sleep long but is regressing so who knows... I am still going to try and get my ds to sleep longer stretches at night but it looks like I will be up a little longer. I empathize though- sleep deprication can be tough!!

I understand that extra food doesn't help, Definately, just thought that would be reason for one of the NW, hunger! I don't expect my lo will sleep through for a while, my DS did not until 8 months, but its part and parcel of babies, some do some don't, not a lot a can do lol!

Thanks for your replies, I am ok with 1 waking, just wondered if it was normal, but now I know it is I can relax a little, I much prefer my lo to have an earlier bedtime, which she has than have her stay up till midnight.
thanks again.
