Loved but now refusing veggies....what do i do???
« on: June 22, 2007, 22:35:25 pm »
Hi all,
My dd is 8 months next week and we started on solids at 6 months. All was going well until about 10 days ago. She stated getting fussy about her lunch and started to eat less and less. I put it down to teething and perservered but not forcing her to eat all that she would normally eat. Then she started to refuse lunch all together. I thought maybe she wasn't hungry enough. I was on a bottle at 7, breakfast at 7.45, bottle at 11/11.30, Lunch at 1pm, bottle at 4, solids at 5.30 and bottle at 7.30. So today I moved her to the following schedule, bottle at 7, breakfast at 8.15, lunch at 12.30, bottle at 3.30, solids at 5.30, bottle at 7.30. (I cut out a bottle before lunch but increased the amount in her 2nd and 3rd bottles). She was hungry but still refused her veggies! I tried veggies again at tea to no avail and went right back to basics of just potatoe. She just screwed up her face after she tasted it....YUKE mammy and then proceeded to gag!
Has this happened to any of you? Any suggestions or advice as to how to get her back onto veggies? Is her feeding routine ok?
She loves fruit and cereals.
Thanks

What kind of veggies are you offering, and what ways are you presenting them? At that age, Riley loved veggies as finger foods, esp when dh and I were eating them as well. He loved brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, peas etc.

I am in the same boat with my LO.  He is now 12 M and we have had this come up again and again.  Eventually I am able to over come the veggie issue, but only for 2 - 3 weeks at a time.  I am getting frustrated and I am out of ideas too.

I tried finger foods and he is even less interested.  The only thing that works some of the time is mixing the veggies with apple sauce.

But on a bright none, my LO ate cut up grapes today.  He has rejected every fruit or veggie that wasn't pureed until today.

I would perhaps try something a little more interesting, such as making a pasta sauce with veggies within or a risotto. I also think trying them as finger foods is a good idea, especially if they see you eating them too! Perhaps also add some dips to finger foods to make them more interesting. Hummus is usually a hit with babies and pretty easy to make if you don't want to get shop made stuff.

Thanks, I'll give the veggies and tomatoe sauce base a go. I'm using the Annabel Karmel book for recipes and up until 10 days ago she pretty much tried and liked everything. I wasn't a veggie lover as a child so she may of gotten her dislike from me, but I love all veggies now! She doesn't like courgette, cauliflower or brocolli but all other veggies like, carrot, parsnip, sweet potato, butternut squash, sweet corn and pea's were all a hit. I will try to disguise the taste of them with apple puree for a time and gradually reduce the amount of apple puree over time to see if that works too.

Thanks, have a good weekend
