Not rolling over - any ideas?
« on: June 25, 2007, 18:31:02 pm »
My daughter is 4.5 months old and she doesn't roll at all.  She has started grabbing her legs and moving to her side, but that's it.  The doctor said not to worry, and that the best thing I should do is let her get frustrated and she'll learn to roll on her own.  I've tried that, but her crying makes me so anxious!  Does anyone have any ideas/games to play for her to practice rolling?  Should I also roll her the same way?  Do the arms go over first, then the legs, or vice versa??  Help!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about the rolling. DD only started at about 8 months. You can try teaching her, but I don't think you'll have too much success until she's ready.

Yup, I agree with the other ladies.  My doctor said the 4 month guideline is really based on babies who spent all their time on their tummies.  They don't expect it that early anymore since our babies spend a good deal of time on their backs. :)

Mine doesn't roll yet either - I figure they will learn to do it in their own time - I really wouldn't worry!  Apparently I didn't talk till I was 2.5 years old -  but as all my friends tell me I have sure been making up for it ever since...

My DS started to roll over while being placed in the gym - in order to reach for something. I also used to have fun rolling him with a blanket (you put a blanket on a bed and a DS on one end of it and gently move the end up so that the baby got rolling). It sparkled a lot of laughter. But DS started rolling on its own after 4 months anyway.

As pp have said, don't worry about it as your daughter will do it in her own good time.  My son Sam is physically very different to my daughter Zoë when she was his age and is much stronger but he's not rolling yet.  It'll come.

My DD did front to back at around 4.5 months, but I think it was more of accidents than actually trying to at first.  She did back to front at 5 months.  I think it was that at this time she actually got interested in objects enough to see it and want to get it.  I just put it just out of her reach and she went for it and over she went.  She also only rolled the one way (to the left side) for quite sometime before being able to go the other way, so try both ways.

Thanks everyone!!  This makes me feel so much better!  She still isn't rolling or seeming interested.  I tried some hard lovin' this morning, by not going to her aid when she got bored.  This just turned into a HUGE fit, which then took me an hour to get calmed down.  Forget that one!!  I'm giving up on the rolling - like you said, I'll miss these days of "non-mobilization" soon enough!  She'll figure it out eventually (or I'll just have to carry her to her first job interview - no biggie!)

Thanks again!
