How fast should we be increasing solid amounts?
« on: June 26, 2007, 13:28:57 pm »
Hello,

We're on day 4 of solid food introduction (LO is a week shy of 6 months) and things are going pretty well. So far we've done two days of baby rice, and two days of carrot puree. Each day I've given him about 2 tsp, and he's eaten it up like a champion. I've read that they only take a couple of spoonfuls in the beginning, but how long should I wait to increase amounts and by how much? If he seems interested after the first couple of tsp should I give him more? He's got a really healthy appetite, and often I have to pull him off a BF otherwise he'll just eat and eat and eat. I don't want to overdo things at this early stage in the game.

TIA,
Alison

Hi Alison
I would say after the first few days if there is no reaction, it is okay to feed them more.  I actually am starting to 'limit' Julianna's solids as she will just keep going, but then not want a bf later.  So Iam doing the bf first now and it seems to help.  She is around the same age and I give
7 bf
8 (or earlier lately)Breakfast - cereal - usually 3-4 tbsp
11 bf
12 Lunch - veggie 3-4 tbsp
4  bf
Dinner - cereal and fruit - 3-4 of each
then bf before bed.

Hope that helps

Alison,

May I suggest that you check out the Baby-led Weaning FAQ post?

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=92560.0

As your lo is breastfed, it makes him an ideal candidate for this approach to introducing solid foods - self-feeding (which is essentially what BLW is) really helps los to regulate their solid food intake and maintain their milk intake by not over-feeding (a risk with spoon-feeding, especially with hungry/greedy babies).

If you think that you might be interested in this approach, there is also a Support Thread for parents trying it with their los - it's a positive and encouraging read!

As a matter of fact, Freya,s Mum, I love that thread.  Since I tended to do more or less what is recommended there - which were not my dd pediatrician orders - I wish I had read it back then.  I had a lot of "faith" on my daughter,s instincts but could not avoid anxiety about doing it right.
