Is he protein milk intolerant?
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:41:34 am »
Hi I have a 16 week old son Jakson. He is breastfed and has been since birth with no supplements. Since about 6 weeks he has started vomitting after most feeds. Sometimes a lot and sometimes not much at all. I have taken him to many doctors, paeds and health nurses and none of them suspect reflux as he is not in pain at all. quite the opposite. he smiles and giggles when he does throw up. it is immediately after a feed and sometimes afte rhe has been lying down and picked back up again he will vomit.
could he be intolerant to dairy? myself i cannot drink milk unless it is mixed with something, like a milk shake or coffee etc. if i small plain milk i gag and nearly vomit myself. i am not lactose intolerant but obviously have some degree of milk intolerance. could jakson also? i have a fair bit of dairy in my diet. like yoghurt, butter, eggs, milk in coffee (decaf) and milk shakes etc. is it worth trying to eliminate dairy from my diet? how soon would i notice an improvement if this is the problem? should i seek medical advice before doing this and would i need to supplement my own diet if i cut out dairy?
thanks in advance
shannon and jakson

Hi there, def worth a try, you can take supplements but lots of foods have calcium in so just eat them instead of dairy products. If you see an improvement, then you will know whats going on. I don't think you need to seek medical advice just eat well etc

He could just be a "happy spitter". Reflux is different from GERD - many babies spit up without pain and grow out of it.

You can try the diet for a few days.

my lo had diahrea since her birth and when I put her on Nutramigen (milk without bovine protein) her diahrea stops the same day... it was crazy... I then stopped eating milk and everything with milk and continued the BF, and now everything is OK and she has 7 months in 2 days...

My son spat up a lot. I mean a LOT. But it settled down at about 5 months when the sphincter muscle on his stomach matured. It just takes some babies longer than others.
If he's happy and giggling it really doesn't sound like a milk protein issue. You'd also be seeing increased discomfort/ gas/ frothy green poos. Blood in stools is also a very common indicator of a cow's milk protein problem.

It might be that you have some oversupply issues which made my spitting up worse. He really does sound like a happy spitter.
