Scorching hot weather...do I have to stay inside?
« on: July 11, 2007, 19:31:42 pm »
Hi,

This seems like a stupid question...but it's really hot here, 37C (I live in Canada) and I feel like I'm going to overheat my LO if we go outside. She is 13 weeks. Our family one has one car, (DH has it for work) so if I go anywhere I have to take DD in her stroller. It seems like she sweats a lot in it. Of course I put a blanket over the opening so she has shade, but I think that's making the airflow under there quite stagnant...causing her to sweat. Any ideas? I haven't been out of the house for a couple of days....we used to go for walks frequently.

Thanks
Lyndsy

when it is really hot i used to take my lo out just in a vest and a sun shade for shade attatched to her buggy.otherwise could you go out earlier or later in the day so it has cooled a bit?....jenny

We're in Georgia in the US where it's really hot as well -- we try to get out in the early morning before it gets too hot -- I would try and create shade without the blanket over the stroller if you can just to get the air flowing, but if she's just sweating a little and seems fine otherwise, she'll be fine. :)  You can offer some extra milk (formula or an extra nursing depending on how you're feeding) if you think she's sweated a lot, but mine were always fine with a little bit of sweating.

Thanks for the reassurance on the sweating :D

I guess I am so worried about her overheating, you hear such horror stories about SIDS.

I'm here in Hot Town,Texas - and I've found that giving her a teething ring helps amazingly!!  I put it in the freezer about ten minutes before we leave, then I give it to her when we've been out on a walk.  Since your LO is so little, you might have to hold it for her.  I've also learned to "walk around" just about anywhere -- the grocery store, a gas station, the mall, a neighbor's house.  I understand that might be too tough, since you don't have another car, but maybe you could find somewhere close that has some AC.

How about a lambskin buggy liner?
Sounds crazy but they do keep babies cool as they absorb the sweat - we had one when Toby was born and it was a hot summer - it was great! We just put him in the buggy in a singlet with the sunshade and this buggy liner.
Teething ring is a good idea though!
