Reading with Baby
« on: July 17, 2007, 21:15:13 pm »
Hi!!
So....I just want to see if what I'm describing is normal.  ;D When Tanner was really little - he would sit and look at books with me for quite awhile. Then he started to lunge at them and try to eat them (this lasted a few months). Then about a month ago he would look at them with me for a little while and then lunge at them and turn them around in his hands. NOW...since he's started crawling he won't sit with me and read.  :'( He'll sit for the first page maybe and then just crawl over my legs or reach for a toy. Does this stage pass? Will he eventually sit and read with me again?

Thanks!
~Jaci

PS I should add - DS is 9 months.

FUN!!! We haven't met any other Tanners yet!! Nice to meet YOU, Ellison! So far it's been really nice having a name that not very many other children have.

Thanks for replying!

Jaci, my DS never liked to 'read' as a baby.  He always just wanted to eat the book.

He's now 3 and loves books.

I just persevered but didn't make it an issue, you know.  So if he didn't want to sit and read, fine.  But really make it exciting when he did.
I think at your sons age, there are so many other things he wants to explore and when he's done he'll come back to books/stories.
I found the best time for stories is late afternoon and just before bed, thats usually when they a little tired and a bit more relaxed.

Don't worry!! It's normal!

I totally agree that is why your member name caught my attention.  We have no idea where we found this name - but we added it to our list and there it sat for months until we decided.  I love it - i think it is unique enough without being freaky.  Hope your Tanner is doing well!  Ours is 8 weeks and going through a tough time adjusting his naps and eating patterns.  I go back to work in 4 weeks so i am desperate to get him on track.  I am thinking about leaving my job in the next couple months though - who know?  I am all over the place and cannot figure it out.  But life is good with baby - he has started smiling and cooing and there is nothing like that!

DD went through a stage of not being able to sit on our lap while getting her bed time story as she was way too interested in moving around.  We then went to reading while in her cot and being contained.

Definitely a stage as she became interested in books again and loves them!

Leo is 9 months and is loving books at the moment, but not crawling yet, so a possible connection?
He particularly likes the books with different textures on the page such as 'That's not my....'.
BUT his favourite all time book is Baby Boo - it has pictures of other babies faces in, and a mirror on the last page where he can see himself - always makes him chuckle!  :D
I'm sure when he starts crawling he will lose interest for a while as Toby did.

At this stage I would read books to my children when they were in their cot or sat on my knee having their bottle of milk. During other times we would read books and make it fun but it would usually only last a few minutes like this. They both love books now so don't worry about it.

Hey there! I wanted to tell you I think this is normal behavior too. He's discovered he can move around more and he's ready for action! It took me FOREVER to get my DS to sit with me and read. And yes, sometimes even now he will sit for a second and then he's off. But I leave books around the house for him so when he's in play mode he finds them and will sit and read to himself. It's very cute. The fact that's he's interested in them at all is a good sign, even if he's chewing them, turning them around and looking at them upside down.

So glad to see this thread - I was actually about to post a question on "how old was your lo when..."

Our dd is 7 months and we have had a hard time reading to her since she was old enough to grab - she LOVES books and gets all hyper - about eating them.  She gets VERY irritable if I try to turn the pages.  Definitely not a calm/relaxing activity.

A couple of things that do work are: 1) reading to her while she's in the Johnny Jumper, with the book out of reach, or

2) sitting on the floor a few feet away and reading to her while she crawls to me - she really gets up some speed trying to snatch that book!

Now DD is all over the place my best trick for  book time is to have the touchy feely ones (Usbournes "That's not my .... " are fab for this) along the sofa and on chairs etc so while she's busy practising her cruise conntrol she flips through to have a feel. Works a treat  ;)
