Newborn falling asleep during feeding
« on: July 12, 2007, 20:37:17 pm »
Hey, what do you do when your breastfed newborn falls asleep during a feed? Im afraid that she is only getting the foremilk in which case the oxytocin is knocking her out. Do you try to stimulate her (rolling of the palm, cycling her legs) and then try to finish the feed? Or do you try to stimulate her for the A (activity) and let her go to sleep, trying again during the next feed?

Usually I either lay down to sleep myself or tried to get a shower, either of which was a sure thing to get her to wake up again so I couldn't do either, and then we finished the feed. ;D

Seriously, newborns sleep way more than they're awake for a while, except when you want them to. LOL  :-\ I'd try to keep her feeding, but if she falls asleep, bear in mind that she'll waken when you don't expect it and she can nurse then, and it's possible that you'll be able to "re-set" the routine then. :)

Hi, sorry I didn't see this until now, but have split it so you'll get more replies.  It's totally normal for newborns to pass out during feeds, you might try gently to rouse her, but if it doesn't work, don't worry about it.  Also, A time pretty much consists of feeds and diaper changes for newborns and not a whole lot else.

I would initially try and keep the feed going.
There are a few tips on this thread:

But sometimes you won't win and they'll sleep whatever you do.

If you really feel they might not have finished a side you could start with that side next time if the intervals between feeds has been relatively short (e.g. less than an hour).

I used to find that if I prodded my breast that this would make my dd stir and she would start feeding again. I would have to do this a few times in one feed sometimes.
