12 wk old getting tired only after 1 hr wake time
« on: July 19, 2007, 19:01:49 pm »
My LO is currently on 3 hour EASY.  However, starting this week he only takes 45 minutes naps and wakes up happy.  However, he would get tired after only 45min-1 hour.  Should I be transitioning to a 3.5 hour EASY or may 4 hour EASY?

Should I just let him take 45 minute naps?  I would prefer him having longer wake time and naps.  With such short wake time, he's only cheerful the first 30 minutes and then really mellow for the rest of the duration.  Please advise.

His night time sleep is fine with only one feeding.  He wakes up at 7 am and is in bed by 7:30 PM.

hi there
you're right in thinking he needs to change to 3.5hr EASY, often when 45 min naps start for no reason it means lo is ready for more A time.
I would try extending his A times but keep it low- key so he doesn't get overtired and start with just 15 mins. let us know how you get on x

Hi Kathryn:

I'm gonna try that.  Thanks.

Just an update:

Instead of following his sleep cues (usually around 45min-1hr), I extended his wake time to 1.5 hours.  Now he sleeps like a champ.  However, yesterday he wanted to sleep for more than 2 hrs and I had to wake him.  I guess it's working too well.   LOL

Thank you so much for your help.

My LO is super restless now.  I extended his A time to 1.5 hour to correct the 45 nap issue.  It worked like a charm for a few days, but now it's a mess.  It started with him fussing and refusing to go to bed at 7 pm, and now it's affecting his naps.  He used to fall asleep on his own, but now he screams when I put him down.  if he does sleep, he tosses and turn a lot more than usual (during naps and night time).  I wonder if he's getting any sleep at all with all the grunts & tossing and turning he does.  It's like he can't seem to get comfortable, but I haven't changed anything.  I've checked his crib and changed the sheets a few time, but can't seem to find anything wrong.  Please help!!!

hi there
it might be that 1.5hrs is a bit too much for him and he has built up some overtiredness. Perhaps you could shorten it again for a couple days and see if that helps.
Many lo's don't have the same amount of A time all through the day. My dd at that age would have perhaps 1hr or 1.25 hrs first thing in the morning, then could do 2 lots of 1.5 hrs, then last only 1hr before bedtime. Can you post your new routine so we can try to help?? don't worry, you will get back on track! x

Hi Kathryn:

I am currently using the routine you posted for me.  I will try reducing his A time to 1.25 hours and see if that helps.  And I will also pay close attention to his sleep cues.  I hope this works because he's been so restless.  Thanks for the advise and I will keep you posted on the results.

Hi ladies,
I am having similar issues with my 10 week old... He takes 30-45min naps, and is awake for a max of 1hr.
Can you tell me how you kept your lo awake to extend the A time? I have been trying, but I think I am overstimulating my boy and then his naps seem to get shorter. Any suggestion would be great.
Meg

I used to take dd for a walk in the stroller as by that age she had stopped falling asleep instantly in it and liked to have a good look around. Nice and interesting without being too much

Just an update:

I have been reducing my LO's A time to 1 hour to 1hr 10 mins (following his sleep cues), and he's been doing a lot better.  What a relief!!!  He takes 3 two hour naps and a 30 min catnap!!!  Thank you again Kathryn .   You are a lifesaver!!!!

He turns 3 month today.  When should I try to increase his A time?

that's great news! hooray for you!
You'll know when it's time to increase his A time as he will do one or more of the following:
take ages to fall asleep for naps
cry when put down for naps
nap for only 45 mins each time

Just follow his cues as you are doing just now and you'll be fine!
good luck!
