brenda

i think it's possible that what worked yesterday, didn't work today because.... he actually had a good nights sleep.  That has never happened before.

You are doing great!  Hang in there.

Brenda - I know my advice has maybe been in contradiction to others, and I really don't mean to confuse you as I know how hard it is going through all this.  My advice is based purely on my experience with DD, which was infact given to me by another mum who had similar issues to me, that being that no matter what I tried no 2 days where consistant and we where getting NW's EW's and crappy naps.  For us rock bottom came when she took a no nap day  :o and things just couldn't get any worse.

That being said I still hold that some days you may need to only do 1 nap.  If he wakes at 7am or after and has had a good 11.5hrs undisturbed sleep then you have a really good place to start from on a 1 nap day and still if necessary that day do a slightly early bedtime.  If then you get an EW the next morning do a 2 nap day to help see him through to a sensible bedtime.  Ultimately its a judgement call only you can make.

Do you keep a record of his sleep, it may be an idea to note down wake ups naps and bedtimes for a week to get a clearer picture of what sleep he will take and when.  Like I said I hope I'm not just confusing you further, your doing great and there is light at the end of the tunnel things will settle down again soon  :)

Thank you.... after a horrible day yesterday...  20 minutes in the am and no nap in the pm.  ugh....  i had him in bed by 645, he was asleep by 715.. and woke up this am at 715!!  So, he had a great night's sleep!!  I figured today would be the day I give 1 nap a shot.  So, he was a bit cranky all morning.. but he is getting his last tooth in... seems to really be bothering him...  around the time he would normally nap, dh took him to the mall for 30 minutes.  By the time they got home at 11, he was too tired to eat, so I put him right down by 1115.  He was asleep at 1130.  I am hoping for 2 hours, but I am not going to hold my breath.  If he's up any earlier, I may try for a catnap later.  If he sleeps until 130, I will get him to bed by 630.  How does that sound?  How long does it take them to adjust from being such a crankass??? lol  Let me know if there is any thing else I should know about or watch out for!!!  Thanks!!!

that sounds good, I will keep things crossed that he takes a good nap.

How long does it take to adjust from being so cranky, mmmmm...., not sure I know the answer to that one.  I do know all about teething during this transition as Lily has cut a front tooth, 2  molars and is working on molars 3 & 4 since starting this transition.  Makes for a happy house doesn't it  ::)  Lily has been living on Calpol, a dose before nap, a dose before bed and if particularly crabby a small dose in the afternoon just to make my life bearable  ;)

Completely off topic but thought I'd drop by and let you know our new baby has arrived safely - Amy Christina, born at home after 3.5 hr labour (woo hoo!) weighing 8lb 6oz - so chances are I'm not going to be on the board much in the coming weeks.

Oliver's routine has settled down beautifully now, with no major setbacks. He's waking between 6:30 and 7:30, going down for a nap after lunch sometime between 12:30 and 1pm usually lasting 1.5hrs, then in bed by 6:30pm (unless he has a surprisingly long nap, but it's still 7pm at the latest). We had a couple of days when his naps went down to 1.25 hrs and we got a few NW but I just brought the whole routine forward by half an hour for a couple of days and it settled back down again.

We've had a few NW the last couple of nights but I think that might be due to other causes!!

Hope you're all doing OK and making progress in the right directions - we had such a nightmare with this transition but we're proof that there is hope and that sanity is just around the corner!

Congrats Laura  ;D  What a great birth story!!!  Glad Oliver is cooperating for you...back to the NW's with the new little one  ;)

Well, at 18.5mos, we have had our FIRST stretch of 3, 1 nap days.  Hope I don't jinx it by posting here though  :P  We've been at it since 11 mos so it's about time!

DS had a 2.5 hour nap yesterday!!   ;D ;D ;D  The day before he only had a 1 hour nap, which threw me off a little.

Too bad a leaky diaper woke him up this morning...  >:(  I can't even blame the diaper job on dh, it was me!

We're doing OK here too.  We still aren't getting many decent naps, mainly 1.15hr some even less.  What we are doing tho is successfully shifting her day forward.  We were on 505.30am wake up and 5.30pm bedtime.  This went up to 6am-6pm which was better but then wake ups started drifting back again to 5.40am.  So what we have been doing is move everything on 10Min's a day.  Thats all meals, naps & bedtime by 10Min's.  So far we are up to 6.40am wake up & 6.40 bedtime.  So it is possible to shift an early day, which makes so much difference to have her day run in line with the rest of us  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just wanted to update on Rocco's naps....  I have been trying to allow him to take a morning nap, which he won't take, so I get him out at 11 and eat and back to bed by 12 or so.  Yesterday, he slept from 1245-2... ugh.... he was in bed by 645, not asleep until 715. We also had our first NW at 1030.  He may have had a bed dream, but he sat up for about 10-15 minutes, on and off crying and eventually went back to sleep.  That is VERY unusal for Rocco.  So, today's wakeup was 7am.....  I suppose I should just put him down for one nap early???  When doing this, what is the ideal time to lay down when trying to get one long nap?  He's usually not tired enough by 1030, but seems to be pretty cranky by about 1130.  If he wakes at 1, what do I do?

I think aim for 5hrs IF he has had a good nights sleep (11hrs or so).

i think we have officially made it to 1 nap!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D  he has settled into this routine:
awake b/w 6-6:30, nap 11:45-2/2:15 and bedtime 7/7:15.  No NW so far....so hoping for the best!  i am hoping we will be able to push name time a bit later eventually.
