5 month old's continual nightwakings - what else to do??
« on: July 26, 2007, 10:09:41 am »
All

My DD2, who is just over 5 months, has trapped wind problems which keep us both up all night, have done since 2 weeks old… I have sought much help from the bf (she is EBF), allergy and reflux boards but sadly we have not been able to pin point a solution. DD1 was the same but grew out of it at 7-8 months, so just hoping for the same thing

So my questions are more about if there is anything else I can do to deal with it at night

She usually starts off by getting restless, so I give her the dummy to settle with (she does not have this to go to sleep any more, recently weened and rarely any other time now). This may work for a while but she gets increasingly restless, it falls out, etc. she is pulling up both her legs trying to pass the wind, getting increasingly agitated.  I then feed her. This seems to provide comfort – either as it relaxes the digestive system so she she can pass the wind or it moves it on. She will then resettle, but there is always more wind later on. I can sometimes also settle her by literally pinning her down in the bed beside me until it passes, but this is rare

Things move in phases. Sometimes she is more restless early evening, others in the middle of the night, others early morning, often all 3

Because neither of us continually get enough night sleep bed time is usually 7.30, get up 8.30

I hate using the dummy, hate feeding her when she is not hungry, hate not seeing my DD1 in the morning as we are so tired but don’t know what else to do. We have tried settling her with water, no luck. When her sister improved she woke less and therefore did not look for breast or dummy, but its such a fine line re creating the props….

Her days are not great, she feeds every 4 hrs but is a 40 min napper, I am trying to deal with this too. I am sure some of the earlier wakings are over tired related but the latter ones are def wind

Any thoughts??

Hi there

Could you tell me what her daytime shc looks like - when are those naps taken, etc...? Is she on solids at all?

Hi

thanks for replying ;)

She is not on solids yet, she's an "average" weight baby - 50th percentile and 15 lb, 9 oz. In the day feeds every 4 hours, can go longer but gets irritable!! Can tell her feeding at night is re wind as she stops the moment it comes out and is ready to settle

Nap wise.... as I say working on that!! Recently moved her to cot - using a jolly mix of W2S, pat ssh, A times etc to give her at least 2 "big" naps a day,  plus cat nap if can squeeze it in. Typically 2 - 2 1/4 hrs A time if nap has been ok, but naps are no longer than 1 hr, 20 at present, unless I extend so we literally get a 40 + 40. But some days are literally just 30 & 40 minuters.... ::)

Have you thought about watching what kind of food you eat which could contribute to her being more gassy? Like if you have broccoli or spicy food???

Yes thanks ;)

with it being a nightly thing then if its an allergy / intolerance then it will be something I have all the time, currently dairy free as this is most common but no impact so far. Then may give others a try

Sorry, not being very helpful here :-[. What worked for us was to bicycle J's legs throughout the day (especially before bedtime) to pass wind & some have lots of luck with gripe water.

Oh gosh please dont worry about that!!! have spent so much time with so many ideas from people, everything is welcome, just sadly nothing working so far. have peddled before when wind is actually there but could try throughout the day

I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on how to manage it at night, the doc mentioned the water one, just she wont take it!! ::)

I just wanted to say that peddling her legs throughout the day might help gas move along before it becomes painful.  You can also try mylicon drops.

yes i would recommend mylicon at every feeding and burping her constantly throughout the day. gas at night is common in babies that aren't burped enough during the day. burp before and after every feeding.
