Help! What to do about gas and upset tummies!
« on: August 01, 2007, 05:21:48 am »
Hi, my 11 week old baby girl seems to be going through a rough patch with her wind lately.  She seems to get quite upset when she wakes up and also during and after feeding.  She will bite down and pull away from the nipple (ouch!) and try to pass wind which makes feeding her difficult.  I don't really know what to do to try and get the wind out.  Ive tried giving her gripe water, bicycling her legs, pulling her knees up to her tummy but it doesn't seem to be working.

I haven't been eating anything out of the ordinary lately either that could be producing gas.

Even though its a little bit early for most babies, i think she might also be teething as she is also rubbing her gums frequently and drooling and has had a little bit of dihorrea.  Im wondering if that is contributing to her wind?

Any suggestions would be of great help.  Im not sure if the doctors can give something to help relieve the wind either.

What's "ordinary" food to you? Garlic, onions were BIG contributors of gas for my LO. Try eliminating a variety of foods including dairy from your diet, and slowly introduce one by one to see if it makes a difference.

My LO had huge problems with gas. Can yours burp well? That is the best solution. Also, passing it through the other end. Try tummy massage. Use non-nut oil, like grapeseed oil, olive oil, and massage in a clockwork motion, using gentle strokes initially and build it up to something firmer. It should touch the base of the ribs, and all the way down to under her belly button.

Make sure you burp after a breastfeed.

While some babies do teeth early, I don't think this is a contributing factor to the gas. My take only!

Oh, and also, back here in Asia, we also rub our hands vigorously, and place the warm palms on the baby's tummy... heat helps!

We sent through something similar lately, and my doctor told me to give her Chamomile tea!!  She didn't really like it though ::)

Sounds like the start of teething for me - and it's not too early - some kids are born with teeth!  It might be quite a while before they actually show though.  There's a FAQ on teething and how it can affect the latch - sometimes when the latch changes too, they take in more air, hence more gas.
