11 Months old - wakes at night - should I change schedule?
« on: August 01, 2007, 14:14:25 pm »
Hi,

I am new here, first post.  My son and I have followed baby whisperer since he was 6 weeks old and he is now almost 11 months old.  He has been sleeping through the night since about 4 months old with sporadic wakings with teething, wet diaper etc.  Within the past week though he has changed, sometimes dropping afternoon nap and wakes at night. When he wakes he wants to cuddle for a few minutes and then goes back down.  He is waking at all hours, we put him down at 7:00 and sometimes wakes around 10, then 2 then 4.  He just got in another tooth (he has a total of 8) but seems to be past the worst of it as it has broken through.

Do you think he is waking due to separation anxiety or does he need a schedule change (maybe only one nap?)
Here is his schedule:

Wake around 6:30
Eat 7:00 (bottle and food)
Play
Nap 10:00 to 11:30 (1 1/2 hours)
Eat 11:30 (Bottle and food)
Play
Eat 3:00 (Bottle only)
Nap 3:00 to 4 (1 hour) (Refuses to go down any earlier, not tired)
Play
Eat 6:00 (Bottle and food)
Bath and Book
7:00 Bed for night

Any feedback would be great!

Thanks!

Hi, Welcome to the boards.

When he wakes at night is he crying?  Does he show any other signs of SA, following you around, being clingy, not wanting to be with anyone but you...?
You could be heading into the 2-1 nap transition.  I would maybe wake him after one hour in the morning and see if he will take a bit longer afternoon nap. Does he wake happy from naps?

Hi,

Thank you for your post.  Yes, he wakes up, stirs and then starts to cry.  I have tried to wait to see if he can resettle himself but get so upset.  He shows some signs of SA, ex. he only wants me when he wakes, if my husband goes to him and gets more upset.  He generally wakes up happy from a nap.  I will try tomorrow only 1 hour in the morning.  When he goes to 1 nap when would that be, around 12:00?

Thanks again,

Amy

The time of the one nap really depends on the amount of A time he can handle.  Some babies go before lunch some after.  It tends to get later as they get older.  When switching to one nap a temp early bedtime is usually in order to keep from getting overtired.

Hey there - I just wanted to make a suggestion. I think 1hr might be too long as well. Try 45mins in the morning & longer nap in the afternoon. SOmething like this:

6.30 - wakes
10-10:45 - morning nap
2ish - afternoon nap (generally 1.5hrs)
7ish - bedtime

Also on the days that he is resisting the morning nap, I would put him down for 1 nap around 11am. He is heading towards OT state if he's taking 30mins nap.

Have a look at the 2-1 switch support thread. Lots of mums going through the same thing. Good for support for those crappy nap days...
https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=98011.msg968316;boardseen#new

I had to chop Jasmine's nap to 45mins since she was close to 10months. Any more^& she would take either no afternoon nap or would take a short afternoon nap. So its a matter of finding the right combo. I would start with 45mins in the morning.

Let me know how you go
Layla
