nursing 2 month old every 4 hours
« on: August 01, 2007, 17:20:39 pm »
Hi!

My 2 1/2 month old son has been refusing the breast at the 3 hour mark.  In fact, for the past three days he will go 4 hours or slightly longer.  He is a very good size as he is already 15lbs ebf.  I'm just concerned that he isn't feeding often enough but he seems content otherwise.  He has plenty of wet diapers too.
His last nursing is usually around 7:45 pm andhe is asleep by 8:30, nurses around 3 am  and again at 7.  We do not dreamfeed.  Am I making aproblem out of nothing?  One  prob I do see is that hisawake time is not asa long as should be for a 4hr EASY but I am more concerned with his number of feedings though.  Any thoughts??  By the way, he refuses the bottle so I do not know how much he is drinking but when I pump I get about 5 oz from one breast.

If he's gaining weight well, has enough wet diapers and is otherwise healthy and sleeping well, then I'd say it's okay.  It's a bit early for 4 hrs, but it's not unheard of.  It might change again with growth spurts too.  I wouldn't do less than 5 feeds a day (24 hr period) - at that age, you usually aim for about 6....but if you're pumping 5 oz, then he may well be getting slightly more when he nurses (he's more efficient than a pump!) - and more again if you double side feed!  SOunds like enough milk to me.  :)

Thanks for the reassurance, Erin!  Muchly appreciated.  I guess I had concerns also because he is a quick eater, too.  However, the scales always show a lot of growth!  Over the past couple days he feeds on average every 3.5 hours.  Thanks again!
