11 week old won't nap while I do errands
« on: August 03, 2007, 18:07:10 pm »
I have an 11 week old son. He is doing pretty good as far as a routine goes. He can only stay awake for about 1.5 hours before getting tired and fussy. I am having a hard time leaving the house with him. Problem is by the time I feed him and get him in the car he is starting to need his nap. If he does fall asleep say in the grocery store, someone coming over the intercom will wake him or putting him back in the car wakes him. I am feeling so homebound and I can't get anything done away from the house. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sometimes it helps our lo if we cover her - such as by draping a big muslin over the hood of the carseat or stroller, so it blocks her view.  And I just try to space my errands out during the week so that we have more days at home than running around.

And sometimes, we just have to "suck it up" on a bad nap and try to make it up with earlier next nap or earlier bedtime.

It gets easier when they have more A time, that will come very soon.  Even the difference between 1.5 and 1.75 or 2 hours was a big help!

I agree with Ellen, it can be difficult to get out and about when they are so young and you are following a good schedule.

Our DD was so much happier sleeping in her cot than sleeping in trolley, car seat, buggy etc, so we did try to schedule things during activity time, but it can be hard when they only have 1 hour awake time.

One thing that did help us was when DD had a lovely with her, and she would then use that to go comfort her to sleep.  She didn't attach to one until she was a few months old, but if your son has one already then it would help to take it with you.  :)

My guy is the same way!  I used to pick one nap (usually the late morning nap) and I woudl do errands during that nap only.  It was always a short nap because he would never get past 30 mins or so but I would just adjust the other naps accordignly.  It actually helped when I was trying to drop that nap because he was used to it being so short anyway.

Occasionally he would sleep longer while we were out but only if he was in his stroller with the hood thing up so it was dark and quiet.

You are only about a month away from a 4 hr EASY and it gets easier then because of longer wake times and fewer naps!  Hang in there!  :)
