Yep, your LO has his days and nights backwards. 4 months is the usual time that kids go to a 4 hour EASY, where they eat every 4 hours. On average 4 month olds do 5-6 hours of day time sleep and then do about 12 at night. The key to getting your baby on a regular day routine is to keep him up more during the day. Below is a typical routine for a 4 month old...

8 - wake/BF
10-12 nap (this nap may be slightly earlier since some kids have a hard time staying awake for 2 full hours at the beginning of the day.)
12 - eat
2-4 - nap
4 - eat
530 - cat nap for about 30-40 min
6 or 615 wake/eat
730 bath
8 - eat/bed
10 - dreamfeed (feeding them while they are still sleeping)

There are two thinks that catch my eye when looking at your day above
1. It looks like your baby snacks alot. He doesn't take a full feed, especially during the night, and is waking up later to snack at the breast.
2. It also do you nurse him to sleep?

To start getting your baby on track you want to wake him for his feeding times. Don't let him sleep past his feeds or he will be up all night hungry. Also, try to keep him up during the day, even if he is cranky. He is mad because to him that is his sleep time, but we need to reverse that. So there will be few days that pretty much stink, but it is needed to get him sleeping at night. Below is a link on how to start doing and EASY routine with a 4 month old. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply yesterday I tried the schedule you gave me, at day time it did well but at night it did not go well. As he is habitual for night wakings it was hard to make him sleep at that time, at 8pm I put him to bed but he woke up at 9:00 it was hard to make him sleep again and he wenk back to bed at 12:00, at 2:00 he agian woke up but after few gentle strokes he went back to sleep this continues after every 15 mins and at 3:00 he was active again and started playing I tried everything to make him sleep again even tried pu/pd for 30mins. but failed I tried to leave him alone to play but he started crying,at about 6am he falls asleep.
now please tell how could I wake him up at 8am to start a new day when he was awake whole night and went to sleep at 6am.

Hi NS, if your lo has the day and night mixed around, you need to encourage him to understand that daytime is for playing and night for sleeping.  In the day, you can encourage wakefullness by obviously playing with your son, changing his nappy, engaging him in outdoor activities etc etc  Keep normal noise levels in the house during nap times.  At night time, do a very slow quiet wind down, which should be the same each night, which will let him know it is bedtime.  At night keep the last feed quiet, keep the room dark, and most of all, each time he wakes, you need to keep using the shh pat techniques etc.... If you take him downstairs, he will associate night time as being playtime as he will not see the difference to day IYKWIM?

I hope this helps you a little, I know it will take time, but if you perservere each day, you will get there I promise  :)

Sounds like it's rough :(

When I'm having to do something that I know my babies don't like I try to keep in mind that it's for their good and that although they don't like it now, they'll appreciate it in the end. It doesn't always make it easier, but it helps to keep me motivated. You will have a few hideous days as he will be shattered, but if you keep the pattern going, like the previous posters have said, you will see the results. Pop on here for support when you feel like you're being a mean mum :(
