too much sleep for 18 mo?
« on: August 07, 2007, 23:49:11 pm »
Hi ladies-

I never had a good sleeper until he turned 13months and now is a dream.  Lately though I am worried.

He usually goes to bed around 7:30 and is up in the am at 6:00 and lays there and plays until we take him out of the crib at 6:45. He has not wanted to drop his morning nap, but will do it if we have running around to do, and when we do he will sleep right after lunch usually for 2 1/2-3 hours.  But typically he still wants two naps, which I am fine with.

But lately his morning nap has been lasting around 1 1/2 hours, starting around 9:00-9:30 or so, and his afternoon 2 1/2 hours around 2:30 or so, and I have to gently wake him so not to disturb his night sleep.

Should I wake him for his afternoon nap or do I need to force one nap? No matter what time he goes to  bed, earlier or later, he will wake at the exact same time.

TIA

My son was on a similar schedule at 18 months.  I usually woke him in the evening before dinner if he slept that long as I didn't want to let it ruin his night sleep. It doesn't leave you with much time in the day to do much outside the house with him but at least you get some me time. At about 19- 20 months he dropped his morning nap but still has long 2-3 hour naps in the afternoon that I sometimes have to wake him from.

I wouldn't force one nap if he seems to be doing well with the schedule he is on.  He will eventually go down to one nap and unfortunately down to none (I'm not looking forwards to that).

I agree with everyone else. Prop your feet up and enjoy the extra Y time.  :)
I have a sleeper as well. She went to one nap early but hasn't really lessened the amount of sleep she takes since then.  We are still getting 12 hours overnight and 2.5 during the day at 20 months.  I have a feeling she is banking sleep and will attempt to drop her nap before kindergarten... ::)
Maybe he's just catching up on the sleep he didn't get as a baby or maybe he's such a sweetie that he just wants you to catch up on the Y time you missed.
ENJOY!
