dream feed-eating less
« on: August 10, 2007, 06:22:59 am »
hi,
last week my 10week old is taking less feed at df. dh does a df and i noticed that lo takes 100-110 ml of ebm. a week ago he was taking over 150ml. should i change something in his routine. we are on 3hr easy and i cluster feed between 6 and 8 pm. last few mornings he woke up just before 6am, not crying just playing in his cot. i would pick him up when he becomes louder- still not crying- and feed him around 6-6.30 and then its on 3hr intervals till 6 pm

Hi

Not sure if this may help you with your LO but my DS is 12 weeks today and he recently started taking less at the DF. It did co-incide with me exchanging one of my BF for a formula. I was cluster feeding as well and thought that it could be that that was making him take less as maybe he didn't need the cluster feeding anymore?? I stopped the cluster feeding and just carried on the 3hr intervals doing the last feed around 7 and he then went back to taking a good amount at the DF. We're on Day 3 of doing that and it hasn't made his night wakings any worse. Unfortunately he's never gone through the night yet :( but he only wakes at around 3 for food.

I'm not anyone with a lot of experience and am just learning as I go with my first baby but maybe a bit of food for thought ???

Hi,

I have a question about the dream feed too, so hopefully it can be answered in the same thread.

My 5 week old is not really fussed about the dream feed.  I cluster feed her between 5 and 7 where she would take a total of 180ml (her normal feeds during the day is about 120ml).  My hubby does the dream feed at 10.45pm and she'll only take 30ml to 60ml max.  She'll then wake up any time between 1.30am and 4am and then take a full 120ml and then wake up again anytime from 6.15am.  So over all I can't really complain, she's a good feeder during the day and also a fantastic napper, but I'm sure as long as she's not interested in the dream feed at 11pm she's a long way off sleeping through!

Any suggestions how to increase the dream feed and decrease the night feed?

The DF is somewhat close to the last feed of the day and not all lo's need a lot of food at that particular time.  You can always try to do the df a little bit later in the night...11pm or so but I am sure everyone's in bed at that time.  ;)  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  It's best they get most of their food in during the day and your lo's are still so young that they are waking up at other times to feed anyway, getting in all that they need to help sustain them.

If you lo is waking up before 6am and isn't crying and such then it's most likely not a hunger issue but maybe a routine tweak needs to be made.

Can you post your routine?

Melissa, my routine can be all over the place because of problems i have with his naps (but that's another problem  ;)
yesterday for example it was like:
e 6am a 6.30 s 7.30
e 9am a 9.35 s 10.30
e 12.10 a 13.00 s 14.00 (30 mins)
e 15.00 a 15.35 s 16.35 (25 min)
e 17.55 a 18.30 (bath)
e 20.00
df 11.15
and next morning he was already awake before 6-not crying
i know i have to sort out his naps-but that is for another post  :)
