can I try yogurt and cheese?
« on: August 11, 2007, 14:15:48 pm »
DS was MSPI, but I've been eating dairy for over 2 weeks now and he hasn't had a reaction, so I was wondering if I should try giving him dairy?  I didn't know if it was recommended to wait until a year if the babies showed any signs of an intollerance.  DD didn't outgrow hers until 14 months so this never even came up.

I gave ds yogurt at 6mo and cheese from about 9mo - hv said it was ok, plus it was fine to use milk in sauces once they were 6mo but check for a reaction.  DS had bad eczema when he was little but dairy hasn't affected it.  He has been on whole milk since 1yr.

For those of you who were told 12 months, how old were they when they outgrew the allergy/intollerance?  (Can you tell that I really want to try something new with him ;)  He just loves food so much and wants everything we're eating so it's getting tricky holding out longer on the cheese stuff especially).

Hi Kim

DD is only 7 months, and we recently (about 3 weeks ago) tried her on a small piece of cheese at dieticians request and the runs she had was really bad, thats why we have been told 12 months and she just said that is standard advice if the lo's reaction has been quite severe in the past x

OK--so you were told to try it though.  I have only tried me eating dairy, so far haven't let DS eat anything.  And his reaction wasn't severe (at least, I don't think it would be classified as so--he never had blood in his stools, just green, slightly runny poops and then eventually, started to get a rash on his chin (that was DD's tell-tale sign).

I think I will go ahead and try a little and see what happens.

Yes she said try it purely to see what happens, and that it is a useful experiment, my lo's reactions have always been severe so I proceeded with caution!

my boy is 8months and was intolerant of dairy in my diet until about now. I have since tried him on a teaspoon of natuaral yogurt and a little melted cheese on rye toast....he loved i and has not seemed to have a problem. Just use very small amounts and not too often. I know what it is like to have bub who wants to try everthing!! Good Luck
