Does it matter where they nap??
« on: November 26, 2014, 14:32:31 pm »
Sorry! More questions from me  ;

So I know we talk about napping in the crib etc but my ds goes off to sleep in his car seat with no problems. That's without him being rocked or driven around. As soon as he gets tired? I put him in and he goes straight to sleep.

Is this an issue or going to be one?  Should I still persevere with the crib naps?

Thanks!
Xx

I wouldn't think it would be a problem, unless:

That's where he sleeps all the time. He will grow out of it for a start, and there are issues with how long babies spend in car seats with regards to their spinal health (at least, that was the advice when my DS was small)

He can't get to sleep anywhere else. I'd do a mix of nap locations if you want the flexibility for him to sleep at home and on the move.

It can also be an issue with their airway (positional asphyxia) if the seat is tilted at the wrong angle if used out of a vehicle (and technically in a car you are supposed to frequently check them and have breaks from the seat on long drives, ie pulling over).

So what happens when you try a crib nap? Any chance reflux is at play and tilting the mattress (among other things) may help?

Thanks for replies! He sleeps fine in his crib at night, goes off independently (for the most part) but during the day it just turns into carnage! I can't do first or last nap in crib due to school run and tbh I am finding myself avoiding doing the midday one too now as it's just such a nightmare!

I'm answering my own question really as I know I need to just persevere with daytime crib
Naps, I think I'm just feeling overwhelmed with things to work out, crib naps, 45 min naps, swaddling (he hates buy daren't start weaning as the fact he goes to sleep at night without much drama is all I have to hold onto right now!), night wakings getting earlier (he was going for 5/6 hours abd now back to 3.5), early wakings... Even writing it all is making me feel a bit anxious :-(

If you coach yourself a bit, tell yourself that it is one nap a day that you're trying for, does that help?

I know it is daunting, but far better than ending up with a child who will only ever fall asleep on the car. Start with the end in sight, as Tracy said.

He doesn't fall asleep in the car.
Just the car seat. Even when it's just sat in the house. I don't drive him to sleep.  He is 8 weeks old.
