Up at night; won't eat during morning
« on: January 28, 2007, 19:58:16 pm »
Kai is going to be 4 months old on Jan 30th and has been a good eater and sleeper - until last week.  He used to be up only once (between 2-5 a.m) and then sleep until the morning (7 or 7:30).  Last week he seemed to get some strong opinions on things - he now is refusing his DF (which he has had since week 3) and is now up twice a night to eat.  The kicker is he won't eat in the morning and usually has his first good feed in the early afternoon, after his second nap.  I am at wits end as Kai has been on EASY since day one and is our second son, so we should know what we are doing, right?!  How do I get him to eat in the morning as I believe that this is a straight case of lack of daytime calories affecting sleep!  We tried PU/PD last night for over an hour (4-5:15), but the poor thing was starving hungry and he would not settle.  He took a full feed and then wouldn't bf until 10:30 this morning and even then it was more like a snack! I have tried all the tricks and can not get him to eat.  Anyone else experiencing this?  Your tricks (or sympathy) appreciated.

It sounds to me like he's getting too much in the night so it's interfering with the day feeds. I would wean one feed and keep the other.

Could you limit the amount of time he bf's (i.e. only offer one side, or a shorter time) instead of allowing a full feed at the second waking so hopefully he is hungry in the morning?

Thanks for your tips!

I agree that the problem is too much at night, so we have perservered and are pretty much back to one feed a night.  Still, he won't eat at that first morning feed.  And, Kai is a lightning fast eater - I am lucky if I get five minutes from him at any feed during the day.  The only time he eats for longer than this is at his bedtime feed and his middle of the night feed.

Hopefully we get back to eating more during the day soon.

That was happening to is for the longest time - he used to eat so much at night that he didn't want milk until about 10.30/11.00.   It got worse as he got older but eventually I just did PU/PD and it worked.  I now have a new problem though that he wakes anywhere between 4.00 and 5.30 - sometimes I can get him back to sleep with pu/pd but sometimes not.  Today was a "not" day.  Managed to get him back to sleep at 6.30-7.15 after us doing pu/pd since 5.00!
Anyway, I'd try pu/pd and try shortening the feed if you can.  Toby used to take 2-3 (sometimes more) feeds in the night!

I have this problem to an extreme!!!  My LO is 5 months and until 3 mnths only woke once in night.  Then he had growth spurt and fed every 2 hours day and night before finally dropping THE DAYTIME FEEDS!!!!!!!  He will now ONLY feed at night (every two hours)  and doesn't feed at all in the day.  If I do manage to feed him he usually brings it all back up!  Probably because he is getting it all at night!  I have tried to settle him without feeds at night but he is so hungry and I worry about dehydration (I have tried offering water instead with no luck!!!)  I seem to have tried everything.  My HV said she has never heard of this before and hasn't had any useful advice :(
