Looking for lunch/dinner ideas for 18mo
« on: July 26, 2007, 00:12:37 am »
DD won't eat anything dry.  It has to be somewhat watery or mushy.

so far we've tried:
- toast with butter and jam
- toast with cream cheese (no go)
- chicken soup
- scrambled eggs (didn't go too well)
- fish sticks
- pasta alone and in potato sauce (won't eat much)
- vegetable soup
- mashed potatoes with sour cream

not too much choice, so I'm looking for new ideas...

What about
Cottage cheese
yogurt
mashed sweet potato
tofu
tomato soup
any kind of beans mashed
applesauce
tortilla with cheese inside (sneak in some beans or chicken)
toast with humus or a pita with humus

Does she like to dip?  I can get Claire to eat anything if I give her something to dip.
Hope that helps
Myia

Also:

Mac and cheese w/ extra milk
grilled cheese sandwich (is that too dry?)
ravioli w/ red sauce
yogurt
stir fried veggies w/ tofu

Have you read any of Anabel Karmel's cookbooks?  She's got a section on toddlers in my cookbook that has some yummy recipes for lo's and they taste good for adults, too!

I'll try to think of more ideas....

DD's favourites that are not dry

Pasta with tomato and veg sauce (you could blitz vegetables in if they would cause a problem)
Mashed potato with veg mixed in with butter and milk added
Sausage casserole (sausages in a tomato and vegetable sauce)
Spaghetti bolognese (lots of sauce with just a little meat goes down best)
Vegetable stew

great suggestions!!!

I've tried a few that you've mentioned and forgot to put them down, but there are several that we'll try.

I've never done tofu.  Would you ladies have any quick and easy recipes???

I stirfry tofu with a little soy and brown sugar.  It ends up sweet which makes dd love it even more.  You can stir fry it with anything really it takes on the flavor of seasoning really well.  You can also use the soft kind in smoothies.  This is a great way to sneak in som protien.

We really like the pasta pick ups from gerber. And they have a variety of flavors too. They are also very soft. I don't give them to DS everyday but it's a big help when I don't feel like cooking or we are travelling.

Where do you buy it?  Wouldn't mind trying.

Today we tried mashed sweet potatoes.  Didn't eat at all.  So I gave her small pieces to eat with her hands.  Didn't go either.  Finally I gave her a hot dog without a bun and she ate the whole thing.  At least she got her protein in :-)

I bought some tofu.  I'm excited to try it tomorrow...

I get the Gerber pasta pickups from our local grocery store. If you need more information here is a link to the website http://www.gerber.com/toddlersite?tmsdir=food&tmspage=grad_pasta.html&tmspromo=2

The tofu recipe sounds pretty cool, I may try that too. You said your DD ate a hotdog, she may also like beef sticks or those vienna sausages that come in a can. Celebrate the victories no matter how small! Like you said at least she got her protein! I may also add that our LO was on a diet of half table foods half baby food for several months before switching entirely to tablefoods.

Macaroni (mac) and cheese  ;D

Myia - it appears that Clair eats a very spohisticated selection of food - WOW.  I can't get Quinn to dip - maybe I have not tried hard enough.....

Tofu didn't go too well.  I think I made it a bit too sweet.  We'll try again next week  :P

have you thought about veggie dogs, they're probably a bit more nutricious and there usually isn't a "skin" on them like on regular hot dogs, so there is less of a risk of choking.

I like to cut tofu in slices and use shake and bake on it.  It only cooks for about 10 minutes.
You can also marinate tofu in salad dressing and just have it plain.

Macaroni and cottage cheese mixed together has always been a favorite of mine and my sons (I know it sounds gross but try it)

What about a baked potato loaded with cheese and veggies since she liked potatoes with sour cream.  Also maybe a potato based soup like cream of cauliflour or cream of broccoli.  If you make it yourself you can also make it thick enough that MAYBE she can feed it to herself without getting too messy.  Although it's probably not the right season for soup-way too hot

finally, Jam sandwiches-  my son often just likes cut up, mushed up berries instead of jam.

Good luck , Lorrie
