How do I discontinue night feeds without CIO?
« on: October 24, 2007, 21:26:27 pm »
My son is 10.5 months, and has slept through the night only a dozen times.  He goes to bed at 7:30-8:00, has a well-established routine during the day, but wakes up EVERY night, between 3:30 and 4:30 to eat.  I have tried pu/pd and shh/pat to get back to sleep, but the only thing that works is a bottle.  He eats an 8 oz bottle every night a tthis time, then rolls over and sleep until 7am.  We also give a dream feed every night, but he is inconsistent about the amount he eats during the DF- sometimes 2 oz, sometimes up to 8.  How do we stop the night feeds?  I would love to get a but more sleep.  He is 26 pounds, but no means underweight, eats plenty during the day.  How can he still be hungry all the time??

Also, last week, started to stay awake after the 4:30 feed.  He babbles, LOUDLY in his crib for about 45 minutes, then starts to cry for me to come in.  I tried going in earlier than he wakes up to wake to sleep, but then he;s up and hungry earlier.  It did nothing to reset his clock.  We're not teething, or sick, and have made no changes to his routine.  I don't know what could be causing this.  Any other parent out there having a similar problem?  I refuse to listen to him cry at night.  I give him a few minutes to settle, but then I go in.  Should I wait longer?   ???

As he is taking a bottle try diluting it eg 6oz milk 2oz water for 2-3  days then 4 oz milk 2 water & then 2 oz each. Then when the calories are gone from his diet he will only be having water & chances are if he gets sufficent water/fluid in the day he won't need it at night.
I'd also actually drop the DF as at 10.5m it may actually be disturbing him & so you may only need to focus on one wake up (that he does naturally)

I BF my 2 boys, but stopped the feeds litterally by picking them up & walking around the house until they calmed & then settling them in bed... with my 2nd my first was such a light sleeper I couldn't even do pu/pd as he would wake his brother. So just saying to myself I will not feed him even if I'm up for 4 hours worked (it actually took less than30mins), then when he woke the next time (even if after only 20mins sleep) I fed & we were rid of the feeds in a few weeks.

Give this link a peek - I used this method and it worked beautifully.

thanks for this link, i feel like i now have a plan of action to try.  My little guy has randomly  been waking during the night around 3am, (he's 9 months and had been sleeping so well during the night until about 6 weeks ago) its not every night but nights are generally consecutive and its only once a night, but it feels like it is getting more regular.  There is just no getting him back to sleep without a bottle, again he will take a full 8oz if offered so i assumed he was hungry, even though he eats well during the day.  He would have his bottle and go back to his cot awake and fall back to sleep happily until morning.  I'm going to try the diluted formula and see if we can kick this habit in time for me to go back to work in a couple of weeks. ;)

You should see an increase in the daytime intake to compensate for what he won't be taking at night  :)
