Help With Sippy Cup Issues
« on: September 14, 2006, 01:25:17 am »
Hi, I've read the FAQ on the sippy cups a few times, but I am still having problems.  My LO is now 8 months old.  Since she was 5 months I practised with the sippy cup, at first it was a Playtex one, then at 6 months she still hated it so I bought the Avent one with the soft nipple.  That one she will actually take a few sips from, but that is all she will do, and not very often either.  First of all she refuses to drink her milk out of it, and water too.  She will only take watered down apple juice, and even then probably doesn't even take an ounce, and EVEN THEN she for some reason will only sip from it if I hold it up to her mouth.

When I do give it to her to hold she knows exactly what to do with it, she will put the spout in her mouth, and she chews on it.  She already has two bottom teeth, but forever she just LOVES to chew on the spout. She does the same for 90% of the time as well when I hold it for her.  When I try just giving her water out of a straight regular cup she goes nuts for it.  Mind you with that most of the water ends up on her since she sucks it in then does major backwash in and out of the cup.

I need some good advice here.  Long ago I was thinking by now she would be much farther along with the sippy cup.

Just wanted to tell you that my DD didn't start drinking milk from a sippy since she was 8months. It was a very slow process as she started with only 1oz then slowly increased from their. She only started holding the cup herself when she turned 1. Be patient she will get their.

Hi Spectra,

My ds is now almost 14 months old and just beginning to get the hang of it!  I actually started a similar thread a while back (having trouble finding it - but will keep looking) and found that it was quite common.  I began with the sippy around 6 months - we also tried a few brands and now I've found that he likes the Avent the best.  Is only now starting to take more than a couple sips.

One thing that was recommended to me that seemed to work was to go get one of those straw sippys.  He actually took a few sips out of that the first time and I was so excited!!!  But then he would just let the fluid pool in his mouth and dribble out.  It just takes patience, trust me ;)

anyway, he now will only take milk out of a straw sippy and water or juice out of an Avent sippy.  He won't drink the milk out of the Avent - he seems to like to have a special cup for that ;)

Hope things start to improve for you!  Let us know how it goes.

Maggie

Thanks guys, guess I shouldn't worry so much then if she's slow going at it. Thanks!

Spectra, I know your post is over a month old, but I just wanted to say (if you're still having trouble with the sippy) that since your lo loves the regular cup, maybe you could try this really neat cup I saw for babies.  It's called a doidy cup.

My daycare lady says Lizwe uses the sippy cup with the straw...Lizwe loved straws anyways--will finish an entire small carton of milk via straw. The sippy cup w/straw is good because they dont have to tilt back...just suck on it...Im still looking for the smaller version--the only ones I have seen so far are quite large for a 16 month old.

I've just got the Avent Magic Cup but I got the 6 month+ and Dom just chewed the spout so I bought some of the 3 month soft spouts thinking he'd magically know what to do but he just chews it.
Guess I need to be more patient and not expect him to suddenly learn these things, he's only had the cup 5 days...as my Grandma used to say "Patience is a virtue"

Thanks all, I've tried many different styles, but have yet to try the straw cup. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

We have the "Playtex Insulator Sport" cups (straw cups).  I also have not found any smaller cups, but these seem to work just fine - they probably hold about 8 oz of liquid.  The reason I like them for the younger baby is because the straw is soft and flexible, and not very long.  I knew that ds would gag himself if the straw was more than an inch or so long.

I'm not sure that small (4 oz) straw cups are even made as they are really meant for older children...

I started giving Madelaine a sippy at 6 months to get her used to it and she had trouble tilting it back so far. I tried her on a straw sippy at about 8 months and she got it on the first try!! I took the straw out and filled it with water plugging the end wiht my finger. I put the other end in her mouth and when she made a sucking motion, I let go so she thought she was sucking in the water. Next try..BINGO :)
Now we use straw sippys, normal sippys, spout sippys, sport sippys ..you get the picture ;)

Try the disposable cups with straws.  They are smaller, and you can wash and keep them if you want to reuse.

Yup, or Gerber makes one that has handles.  Kinda harder to find that one sometimes.

If you are in Canada, the Gerber one with the handles that mousemom suggests is really good and I got mine at a Loblaws (Zehr's, PC whatever).  It was the first one that dd had. Only problem with it, I find, is that the base is really wide and it doesn't fit in any beverage holders ie on her stroller or the car. But its easy to wash.
