Title: whats wrong: nap or A time?
Post by: Luara on May 01, 2010, 00:29:34 am
Hey it's me again  :)

I remember to have heard somthg about cutting naps shorter at around the age of two. Just so I'm ready when the time comes: when is it necessary and how do I know? She's 20 months old.

She's being doing a 2hr nap and a 11hr night, but lately started having some EW and/or NW. I first thought about it being b/c of a too long A she sometimes has before BT (6 or 7hrs), but now I'm thinking if it could be the nap length...

TIA

Luara

what does her day look like?

Hi Lucy, her day looks like this:

7:00 wake
11:30 nap
1:30 wake
7:00 (smtms 7:30) BT

She used to have to go to daycare in the afternoon, so I got used putting her to nap very early cause I prefered she'd sleep before daycare. Now she doesn't go to dc anymore so I think I'm able to delay that nap a little, I just wasn't concerned bc she was doing a great night but now...

what do you think? how is your DD routine right now?

Tks xx

Hi

I'm just stalking really as I was curious to read that your DD did a morning nap and a long A to bed.  I'm just trialling this with DS but I know most people do an afternoon nap.

If you think the A time before bed is too long have you tried an earlier bt just to see?  If not I guess the next thing would be to try and push the nap back.

How long has she been on this routine?

Laura, she's been on this routine for about 3 months, I had to do it bc she had to go to daycare in the afternoon...she took a while to adapt but she eventually did it, she was doing great until about a week ago... can your DS take a an afternoon nap?

Lucy, she has been on 1 nap for a long time, I don't remember exactatly...your routine looks perfect to me but then if I'm going to try and push her nap I'll have to cut it shorter otherwise I think she'll be UT, isn't that right?

xx

Luara - yes my DS can take an afternoon nap but he has major sleep issues...

I reckon try Lucy's routine.  Cut your LOs nap to 1.5hrs like Lucy does.

Ok, yesteday we had a gr8 day, she naped from 12:00 to 1:30 , BT at 7:30 and then had 11.30 night. Now today I had to go shopping in the morning so I left her at grandpa's and picked her up at 12:30 , she fell asleep in the car, but woke when I picked her from the seat!  >:( Oh how I hate this!!!  put her in the crib but she's been there playing for half an hour!! What should I do? I never know what to do when it happens cause there is no way I can AP w her anymore, so what if she falls asleep too late? it's almost 3pm here...I think I 'll keep her awake and give her a super early bedtime... ???

That's what I would do.  I never know what to do with bedtime when there's a weird nap much later in the day, so an early bedtime always seems to be the best solution.  How long did she sleep in the car?

Tagging along too if you don't mind :) DD has had an early nap for a while b/c she has daycare on a Fri afternoon so I have been trying this:

A 6.30
S 11.15-1 approx
S 7.30

She has always lasted better in the afternoon than the morning so it *was* working quite well. Now, however, we are in a late bedtime (due to her taking forever to drop off) EW/NW mess!! Yesterday was:

A 5.15am
S 11.45am-1.35pm
Bedtime: 7.20pm
S 9.20pm :(
A 1.10am
S 1.30am
A 5.50am :(

As a consequence she had a 20 min nap at 10.10am then slept 3-4.30pm...Normally a nap this late would be a disaster for bedtime but she seems tired now (7.45pm) so I will take her up in a mo and see what happens...

Sorry not meaning to hijack, I was considering posting then saw how similar your routine was to mine so wanted to m.a.r.k my spot if you don't mind?

Good luck for tonight :-*

We always just do early bed if there's weird napping issues.

Charli - have you tried either, earlier bed with the routine above OR cutting the nap?

Do you mean cut the nap altogether or shorten it? She so rarely sleeps more than 1 hour 45 mins so I have never felt it necessary, do you think I should try cutting to 1.5 hours? She finally fell asleep at 9.10pm tonight so I think 4.5 hours is the absolute minimum A time she will do before bed...I reckon 5.5 hours is about right  ???

So maybe if I didn't cut the nap and she was waking around 1.30 (most days, I would wake her a bit earlier than this on a Friday if necessary) try bedtime at 7? Or bedtime at 6.30 in the hope she is asleep about 7  ??? I am still so clueless about all this after all these months  :P :-[

Charlie, off course I don't mind, you are very welcome! :)

I think you could try to push and cut her nap a little, it has started working for me on the first night...you can do the early nap only on Fridays though, I think one day is easy to catch up on the following days...

Let's see how it goes now with the 20min nap, the earliest I could do was 6:30, I hope she sleeps well...

Thank you :-* And I must say Maria is SO cute, gorgeous photo!

I think I will try pushing the nap but perhaps not cutting yet (unless for some reason she sleeps over 2 hours but that is so unlikely)

Hope she settled OK for you at 6.30, fingers crossed for tonight :)

Just shorten it - but it sounds like you don't have an "excellent" napper so probably doesn't apply!

try bedtime at 7? Or bedtime at 6.30 in the hope she is asleep about 7
I just thought if you tried an earlier bt she *may* fall asleep earlier - she may not of course but thought it was worth a shot!  I probably would do a 6.45pm bt.

Given Luara is having success though maybe abandon what I've just said and try her suggestion :P

Thanks girls how were your nights?
DD woke at 1.30am (after 9.10pm sleep time) then was up for the day at 6.35am, so actually that wake-up time is a big improvement on the past few days! 9.5 hour night but there you go!
Circumstance meant I wasn't able to get her down til 12.30 today so unintentional 6 hour A time this morning...She has been asleep for 40 mins now, praying she sleeps for at least 1.5 hours!!

Hey girls, how are you doing? I'm sorry yesterday was mother's day in Brazil, I had such a busy day I couldn't get to my computer.

Charlie, thank you I also think she's so cute! ;D - how is your DD going?

Laura, isn't that nice?  ;)

We, again  ::), had a weird day yesterday we went to the church's service and had BT at 11:00pm!!! :o She woke twice but settled easily and woke up at 7:30. Not so bad I guess...when you Los get really OT do you do nap earlier? I wasn't sure so she slept at 11:30 and she went till 1:30. then at night an early bedtime and lets see...

xx

Hello there, how's everything going Charlie? I forgot to say that I agree you shouldn't shorten her nap since she doesn't usually does 2hrs, is she settling fine with the early bt?

My Clara has been recovering well from that horrible late bt on Sunday, last night she did 12hrs night w/ no NW! well I think she really is a good sleeper... I hope everything keeps going right..

That's great news hun, hope she keeps it up!

Kind of all over the place here but she did STTN on Sunday night, then up 1.30-3am on Monday night but was very coldy and coughing.

Yesterday she was up at 7.15am which was great (I think DH not having to get up for work at the crack of dawn helped there) Ended up only napping for 20 mins :( So I put her in bed early and she was asleep at 6.40pm  :o which is sooo early here and she STTN til 5.15am...Granted I would have rather a longer night but it was lovely not being woken up in the night :)

Just going to attempt to stretch out her morning A time slightly more as I think I was over-estimating how long she could last in the afternoon, and do a decent bedtime...But my child is an enigma, what works for one week seems to fail the next  ::)

Thanks for checking in hope it all stays on track for you  :-*
