Title: Quiche/whole eggs
Post by: CCCmom27 on November 15, 2011, 16:44:18 pm
Is quiche ok to give a 7 month old?  I'm confused on the whole egg yolks only until one year advice.  A google search didn't help but rather give me lots of conflicting advice!  I tried giving DS2 scrambled egg yolks and he didn't like them.  I don't blame him; I didn't either!  We don't have any egg allergies in our families so would it be ok to just try normal scrambled eggs and then the quiche?  The only thing I haven't given him is dairy.  So I need to give that a go before the quiche too...

I did a google search and this link from BW popped up  ;)

I have also read that the recommendations are changing, as so much does over time.  I strongly suggest you ask your pediatrician about the introduction off the egg whites.

In the UK they say whole eggs are fine from 6 months.  Eggs are a common allergenic food but so is wheat, shellfish, milk, mustard, celery, etc. etc.  Do check local advice to you though because prevalence of food allergies varies worldwide.

If you do decide to go ahead with it, I have a quiche style recipe which is good for when they're on finger foods:

The recs in Canada are now whole eggs from 6 months too... just to watch because egg white is the most allergenic part of the egg... if no reaction, no worries!

This is obvious but I will say it anyway  ;)- if you choose to give the egg make sure it is WELL COOKED!

Hmm maybe I'll wait a bit but I don't know how long I can wait!  Does that mean he can't have anything with whole eggs in it like pancakes?  He doesn't like oatmeal so my options (that I can think of) are limited without eggs...

Are there common signs of an allergic reaction to eggs?

Egg whites can cause a skin reaction - usually a rash on the face fairly quickly.

I would give it a go TBH, just test with something like a pancake so you know it is well cooked :)

Good idea.  Giving in something like a pancake will also give a smaller amount so if there is a reaction it might be a milder one.  I finally added some photos to my banana / apple pancake recipe here:

And there's a potato pancake recipe here too.  Makes great finger foods and both recipes freeze well.
