Use 2 spoons - one for him and one for you - a toy and a feeding tool. That works for us.

I just let him play to be honest, though  :). He doesn't understand he's making a mess. When he does that will be a different matter!!

I use two spoons too. That way, they think their feeding themselves, they're occupied, but you still get the chance to slip the food in. :)

totally the 2nd spoon in the hand helps them get the concept of feeding themself and keeps them busy too....so we're all happy!
On the other hand....... the touching , squeezing food etc gets them used to the textures!!!!

Depends how much time you have on your hands at the time I guess, (pardon the pun!) ;)

I tend to only give her a toy if she is needing to be preoccupied whilst i get the last bit ready........after that it's spoon in hand no toy! :P

Alexa - I just wanted to add that I have been doing solids before formula since the 6 mo check up because my LO was too full for solids.  She wanted us to focus more on them and just make sure my LO wasn't getting less than 20 ounces of milk.  She wanted my LO to have "breakfast, lunch, and dinner."

Thanks mmom!! I'll keep that in mind!! Right now he is doing fine!! He is taking 26 oz of milk per day.  He doesn't seem to like the apple, he spits it out or makes funny faces.  But he loooooves the cereal!! I hope he gets used to eating fruits soon!!  :)
Were your los like this with fruits or is it my lo?

Spencer was like that at first, I thought maybe it was the tartness of the apple. I tried avocado yesterday and she made such silly faces, but kept taking it as if she expected it to be something else the next bite! Have you tried adding some fruit to the cereal? That's what I do for her breakfast - cereal/banana/prune -her very favourite meal.

My LO loves fruit. But I have to say that every first food is a new experience.  Sometimes I think he hates it, but I think it is the new texture that is weird to him.  Once you try new things and your LO is ok with them, combining foods is fun.  I combine sweet potatoes and bananas, avocados and pears, apples, carrots, and peas...all of these my LO loves.

So right now, I think I can't combine foods because I have to know if my lo has an allergic reaction! (Just as you said mmom)

I have a new question...(one of the million)... When you make your own food, for example puree of apples, do you freeze it and then thaw the cubes every time you are going to use it? Do you use the leftovers for the next feed? I was reading that I should throw the leftovers away, but I'm not sure.  I haven't frozen any food, I made some apple on Monday and I am still using that one today.   :-\
Is this wrong? May be I should try to freeze the puree.

Home made purees should be fine for a few days in the fridge.  If I made a lot, I'd keep out enough for a few days in the fridge, freeze the rest, defrosting as needed.

If a spoon has been in baby's mouth and then in the food, that food should be discarded, not saved and reused.  Babies saliva on the spoon will get into the food and can breed bacteria, etc.  To avoid wasting food, I usually spoon a very small serving into a separate dish and then feed baby from that.  If she surprised me and eats more than I expected I refill.

I freeze in ice cubes trays and then put them into freezer bags. Then I get them out the day before. If I forget I microwave to defrost - which is fine as long as you then heat to piping hot and allow to cool to babies temperature before feeding. That makes sure any potential bugs are killed off in the hot cooking first.

Hope your lo has made less of a mess today. I do a mix of BLW and purees - unfortunately my lo worked out how to blow food out of his mouth today so I got splattered!! Gave up and took it away after the 4th in a row.

It was broccoli puree - he ate more of it when I gave it him as a steamed piece of veg the other day!!!

Dyeeli, so I always need to heat the food to a very high temperature to get rid of any bacteria? Or just when I defrost? Even when in the fridge?

I always heat mine to hot by accident  ;D (powerful microwave) and then let it cool down, but Spencer likes it very warm anyways.
