GS what to do
« on: November 08, 2010, 15:43:34 pm »
DD was having between 5 and 6 day feeds and either 1 or two night feeds...however today, she fed every two hours, at the 5pm feed I fed her then offered her a bottle of EBM that i had in the freezer to scoffed the whole 3oz! (happy she took the bottle!)
So will I start offering the second breast tomorrow? She generally takes the one side and I wait until she comes off, she doesn't tend to stay on unless she is eating....She was quite fussy at the breast this afternoon so i guess my supply was quite low.
I have oatmeal every morning....
any other tips....is the 10week GS a big one...also she was 3 weeks early so should I adjust that down to 7 week GS or do you just go by the age that they are now?

Hi there,

for my DD the 7 week GS was HUGE!  She ate every hour for an entire day (then slept for an entire day straight, only waking every 3 hours to eat, ha!)

I can't answer your question about adjusting for the early birth but I would recommend offering both breasts.  You definitely want to nurse on demand during a growth spurt so that your body will respond appropriately and increase its milk production to meet your baby's needs.

HTH!

I offered both breasts pretty much from the start (both with DD and DS). Let them drain one breast, burp and then offer the other side.

I have also found the following info on the FAQ that i thought could be useful:
2)  At each feed, have your baby empty one breast and then put him on the other breast.  When the second breast is emptied, switch back to the first breast.  Although it will feel empty to you, the body always produces milk in response to a baby's suckling.  After three days you will notice a boost in your milk production.
What do you think?
xx

offered the second today and she refused it? maybe it was a one day GS? although today what I have been doing is feeding her and then right before her sleep topping her up but making sure she is awake when I put her in her cot!

I offer only the one breast, but then obviously more often during the day. That way I don't mess up the one side feeding. I have too much milk production otherwise.
I wouldn't top her up with EBM, because then it takes longer for your body to produce a different consistency of milk for her. the GS will then take longer, because she is not telling your body how much to make, since she's getting enough.
It will suck, since you'll have more feeds at night as well, but GS usually only last 24-48 hours.

HTH!!! Hope Roc is starting to feel better. Antibiotics need about 2-3 days to kick in, he should feel better soon!

oh I hope so.....he is supposed to be going to the Grand Prix on Friday with his daddy!
Yes I thought as much when I was giving her the EBM yesterday, but I was just happy she took a bottle :)
Ok today seems to be every 2.5 hours so perhaps we are over the worst....roll on the big 12 week one!

ETA - scrap that.....just wanted to feed after only 1hour 45mins :o
ETA again - scrap all of the above, just woke after yet ANOTHER 45min nap and feed again so only went 45 mins between feeds and she fed for a while long deep sucks and swallows IYKWIM! back asleep again almost immediately, for probably another 45min nap, this will be I think the 5th one today!

At least she's napping! Just take what you can during a GS! Keep nursing on demand and she will settle down eventually!

I found that DS fed more frequently about the date of his birth (the 7th of most months) but just fed when he needed it .....

ok so I have a different slant on GSs.

I never had the patience to let mother nature take her course and neither did Emma (Oscar DID and was a great feeder, regardless of supply). Emma would bob on and off and never seem satisified so I just parked myself on the couch with her those days (weeks 3,7,10,12 were Emma's worst whereas Oscar's were at 6,12,18 so he was much more textbook) and I would pump after every feed, for at least a half an hour and whatever I got I used to top her up after her next fractious feed (again in our case it was every two hours for around 1-3 days).

I KNOW now Emma had a tongue tie (didn't find that out until after the 12 week GS which was by far her WORST) and that is why she was impatient but she is still impatient when it comes to food till today.....

So if she fed at 7am I would put her in the bouncy (she was always a fast feeder and NEVER wanted to stay on empty whereas Oscar did this no probs) and Oscar in the highchair for brekkie (or DH would look after him) and I would pump on empty, even on here, ignoring the fact that there was no milk there (easier said than done I know) and then get her down to sleep, would get something out even an oz or two, then 9am feed if still fractious would give her those 2oz and then pump again and keep dry pumping for up to half an hour etc etc.

I KNOW GSs with Emma would have gone on MUCH MUCH longer and have been extremely detrimental to my sleep, her weight gain and our overall wellbeing as a family otherwise but she was a very particular little madam who just didn't like to suck on an empty or almost empty breast, period xxx
