Started to need less sleep?
« on: February 17, 2011, 13:01:28 pm »
Hi

LO is 17 months, just gone through horrendous path of teething, but has now popped cannines and back to STTN mostly...but she wakes around 3.30am and plays for an hour, then goes back to sleep. I have no idea why.
Also, she has started to resist naps - she just won't settle well for them and cries ....she NEVER did this before...she still sleeps a good 2 / 2.5 hrs for them, but cries when put into the cot, and sometimes plays for a bit. She will eventually settle though.

I'm a bit baffled. I started cutting her nap down as she was waking early and not going back to sleep, and it's helped a wee bit, just not loads.

Last few days we've had;

7am wake (never usually wakes this late, ever, prob because of NW)
12.30 nap (played in cot for a bit, then settled after 15 mins - used to go straight to sleep)
3pm woke her up
7.30 alseep

2.30 am brief NW put herself back to sleep - think she'd done a poo, as was one there in morning!

last night was

7.30pm asleep
10pm brief cry (she had got herself stuck in cot)
2.30am awake and singing for half an hour
3.30 am awake again and fidgeting for ages and playing with cot bars for around an hour I think
7am awake and fresh as a daisy.

Hmmm. Also, the other thing is shes got very clingy to me - hates it when I'm out of her sight, and also loves playing with DH, but if he puts her to bed and she sees me, she goes absolutely ballistic - tears and tears. I thought SA bit was mostly getting better by now?

Also, is 3.30 wake up from a nap too late for a 7.30betime - she's genereally been lowish on the sleep needs side (was on one nap from 11 months, a real livewire)

Hi..

Just reading your post, the waking during the night & wanting to play generally indicates UT.

SA can come ago, it can sometimes re-surface after illness etc.

A couple of things you could try are to push the nap slightly later (say 1pm) & cap it at 2hrs with BT by 8pm-ish.

Most LO's your DD's age are napping for around 2hrs so the fact she can sleep up to 2.5hrs could suggest that the long nap is robbing from her NT sleep if that makes sense, especially if she is lower sleeps needs. I would cap the nap at 2hrs for a few days & see if this makes a difference. I

What do you think?

Agree here.  And the SA too, it does come and go.  So it gets better for a spell, then flares again.  We are still in the thick of it at 23 mths!
The tweaking never stops!

Thanks  - will do that then. Yes, the SA is v bad. I thought we were over the teething, but last night she was up again crying and rubbing her mouth and saying 'pwah pwah' which means there's something in there she doesn't want (probably her new emerging teeth) So could be that too. Am giving her naps between 12.30ish to 2.30 /3pm at the mo, if she has a bad night then 2.5 hrs.
She seems to do fine on it, but hates being woken at 2hrs, but seems ok until bedtime afterwards.
Will see how tonight goes - but MY GOD, this teething business goes on forever and it's hellish...it's been more and a month of horrendous sleep so far mostly, and still on and off. This is for cannines, I am so dreading the molars!
Thanks ladies for tips on SA too - any ideas on how to deal with it, it's getting so I can't go to the loo when she's at playgroup sometimes.

Hi, yep teething does seem never ending at this age....we have only just got to the end of it with DD now all her teeth are in & she's 32 mths old  ::)!!

Have you seen this link, it may be helpful with your SA issues....

IMO I would cap her nap at 2hrs although I know how difficult it is to wake them....I think it will help regulate her sleep pattern.
