10 months and refusing 2nd nap
« on: October 05, 2013, 13:46:20 pm »
I know that the 2 to 1 nap transition can happen as early as 10 months and although I'd rather not face it as I've feeling my LO is heading that way. The trouble I'm having now is how to tackle it, even after reading the Baby Whisper advice on this. She isn't the best sleeper at night and always wakes at least once and is then up for the day around 6-6.30, her first nap will then be around 9-9.30. She's usually pretty tired then and would probably sleep for about 1 1/2 hours if I left her but then she would refuse her afternoon nap, even though I know she's tired. I've tried cutting short her morning nap but then she wakes up grumpy and acts like she wants more sleep. Sometimes she even fuses over her afternoon sleep after only 30 mins in the morning. My health visitor suggested moving her morning nap later, very gradually and then she would end up with a longer nap later in the morning and that would be it for the day. This makes sense but as she's a bad night sleeper she usually the most tired in the morning so stretching her A time out may be tricky. She's gone from 11am until 7pm with no sleep before and that's with me desperately trying to put her down and her point blank refusing!

Have you tried giving her just an hour in the morning and then going for the other nap in the afternoon?  I can't tell what times you've tried from your post.  I think jumping from 1.5 hours to 30 mins is probably too much of a difference - she may then have been OT for the second nap?  And, equally, a touch UT after 1.5 hours in the morning?  For the 2-1 transition, you need to choose which nap to cap. A lot of people cap the AM nap in order to allow the PM nap to lengthen, then you start trimming AM nap as needed and PM nap moves back until, hey presto, one nap!  (See links below, you may have read them already but just in case!).

Your HV has the right idea with pushing the first nap a bit later - are you usually going for a nap after 3 hours?  She could probably handle longer.  Average A times around 10 months are somewhere between 3 and 4 hours.

Anyone want to talk about the 2-1 transition - #25
