Examples of healthy grown up food/meals, please!
« on: March 20, 2006, 17:29:58 pm »
Okay, I see that most of you had your lo eating grown up food around a year.  But what are some examples of healthy meals that you all eat?  I mean if I make pot roast, pork chops and yams, steak and potatoes, hamburgers on the grill, spaghetti with meat sauce, cream chix over biscuits, etc... are these "healthy"?  We are not fast food people or chips, etc people, but not sure if these are adequate meals for our 18month old.  Not sure if he should eat a lot of pasta, meats, breads, etc...  I need a chef!! :)

Wow, it looks like you cook pretty healthy already! Those are great meals for a toddler. My guidelines for what Tyler eats (and what I fix for dinner) are that it has to clearly go in a food group, can't be chips, can't be sweets, can't be fast food. We eat a lot of homemade soups, stews, pasta, and chili (it's winter and cold here). Even if Tyler just eats the beans from the chili or the green beans from the soup, I'm happy. Tyler's favorite foods are pasta and sandwiches, so I really don't worry too much about limiting him as long as he's eating from other foods groups too. And I only buy whole grain breads and pastas to boost the health benefits for the whole family.

Other stuff we eat? Well, when summer rolls around we grill a lot of chicken, pork, steak, and veggies. Here's a website with a lot of really good toddler eating info (including recipes) and an idea of what their daily nutrition requirements look like. One thing that will keep you from going crazy...I've read in several places that toddler nutrition should be looked at over the course of several days, not day by day because they frequently go for days only wanting certain foods, then they change it up again. HTH!

We've got a thread on the go over at Baby Food recipes that may give you some ideas at the moment about grown up meals.
