breakfast bottle

This is my first posting so i apologise now for rambling! my l'ittle man is 13 weeks and a hefty, healthy 16lbs. Night time wakings can be anywhere between 2.30 - 4.00 following a df at 2230ish where he'll take 6-7ozs and wake from 0550 to 6am..whatever time i give him his breakfast bottle he'll only ever take 3ozs.... does anyone else experience this? it's not that i'm particularly worried only i often read how this is their hungriest time.

Hi and welcome to the boards.

If your lo is waking for a feed at around 4 in the morning, that is probably why he is not hungry when he gets up at 6am.  Have you tried holding off a little longer for a feed to see if he will take more?  If you are on the 3 hour easy, it might be worth waiting until 7am to start your day if he has taken a feed at 4.

hi Paula, thanks for your reply. I have tried leaving him for a little while before offering a feed but he does exactly the same, i would understand the not being hungry if feeding consistently at 4am but for the past 3 weeks he has been waking more or less 0230 - 0300 and taking only 4 oz so you would think he would be hungry.  ???

Do you think your lo could be teething?  I found that when my DS was teething his would not take as much of his bottles

If you think your lo is teething you may want to try rubbing some teething gel on his gums before a bottle and see if this helps.

Was also thinking - what size teat are you on?  I could be that your lo is ready to change to the next size up.

hi Lauren, we had a canny 3 hourly easy going up until a few days ago and then everything has just gone to pot through the night 'coz he's waking so much from 0430 onwards and is awake properly from 0545 which just plays havoc with the routine, anyway this is what we were doing;

awake 0615ish
up at 0630

E anywhere from 0645 - 0730 2 - 3 ozs and will sometimes refuse completely

A 11/2 hrs

S 0830 - 0900 for 45 - 11/2 hours

E 1000 5 - 7oz

A 1hr

S 1100 - 1230

E 1300 6 - 7 ozs

A 11/2 hrs

S 1430 - 1530

E 1600 6 - 7 ozs

A 1 hr

S 40 mins

A 11/2 hr including bath at 1815ish

E 1845 2!! - 7 ozs (depending how tired he is)

S 1900

DF at 2230 6 - 7 ozs

wakes between 0230 - 0330 and takes 3 - 4 ozs

the restlessness from 0430 i'm sure isn't hunger but i wonder whether it's wind from the last feed?  He will babble and 'entertain' himself for a while when he does wake 'properly' at 0545ish but then he wants up, i try the ssh/pat but fin has his own agenda!! I was thinking of going straight to pu/pd?

As i said above, the early rising is causing problems because he then becomes so tired he'll fight sleep and is aggitated through his feeds and can't be bothered with playing and the past couples of days he wants to sleep way beyond 21/2 hours in the morning if i don't wake him so he's obviously trying to catch up on the sleep that he's losing...................so sorry Lauren, i seem to be babbling on myself, i'm just at a loss!!!!!

I sounds like your LO could be telling you that he wants to move to a 3.5 or 4hr EASY  :-\ The things to look out for are:

1. Not taking as much at a feed (baby not as hungry at 3 hours)
2. Erratic Night Wakings
3. They are extending their awake times
4. Starts taking 45 minute naps

More info and sample routines here: https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=63161.0

Calum changed at about 13 / 14 weeks, he had been trying to 'tell' me for a couple of weeks and I completely missed the signs ( I hadn't found this site then  ;))

I decided one day to follow HIS cues and lo and behold he wanted feed every 4 hrs, also over time his sleeping got better and he dropped his night feed about 1 month later (yeah!!)  I never did the dreamfeed.

If he is too tired too take milk after the bath, try some before (as much as he will take) and the rest after, even if you need to top the bottle up.

Does your LO drain any bottles throughout the day?

Lauren

P.S  Calums hungriest time is in the evening and still is.

Hi lauren, it is SO lovely having someone to bounce this around with.. thankyou so much!  i have wondered whether Fin wants a 4 hour routine after perusing these sites and hence i have started extending the length between feeds because, like you have suggested, he does drain maybe 1 or 2 of his bottles and he is hungriest time is probably lunch time at the moment.  he seems to be back on some sort of 'decent' routine but this week i have decided to stick at home at watch his cues etc...

If Fin is draining any bottles, you need to increase then by 1oz at a time until a time comes where he leaves a little bit in the bottom.

Let us know if you need any more help on the transition.
