was sleeping great, now 45 min naps
« on: June 09, 2007, 03:01:28 am »
my LO just started the 45 min nap thing, the last four days (he's almost 12 wks).  he used to take a LOOONG first morning nap (2 hrs), and then started doing 45 min naps the rest of the day -- then yesterday, ALL his naps were 45 mins, so our EASY went kaput.  i know he's only 2.5 months, but could he be ready for a 4 hr EASY?  we just started transitioning last week into a 3.5 hr EASY because he stopped eating well at the 3 hr mark and started staying awake longer.  he also started waking up in the morning at random times (anywhere from 5 to 7am), even though I feed him at the SAME TIME every night (9pm, working back right now every nite 10-15mins to hopefully eventually end at 7:30-8ish).  The week before this, he was waking erratically at night, not hungry, but just waking up.

i'm confused mainly because i didn't think DS would be ready for a 3.5 EASY, but now he's hungry on the mark, every 3.5 hours.  is this okay? he seems so young.. i just don't want to rush him into a 4 hour EASY..  and what do I do about these naps?  Today, he had three 45 min naps and one 30 min nap, then bed around 8pm, DF at 9.    I just feel like his 45 min naps and his increasing alertness have screwed up our whole EASY and I don't know where to begin.. (and not only alertness, but all the new noises he's making -- happy squeals and coos and all sorts of stuff -- it's made it hard to read his cues because he doesn't do the same noise for "tired" as he used to and i find that he's sometimes getting overtired).  two days prior, he was having meltdowns at nighttime because his naps were so bad, but today, there was no meltdown. and should I stop changing the last feed at 9pm till we get the 3.5 hr EASY worked out?

sorry, lots of questions mixed up in there..

Jamie

What is his awake time?
Could you post your routine before he started doing the 45min naps?

Just wanted to tag along and see what kind of advice you get...  also, Jeremy was on the 4 hour easy at 2 months and was doing fine with it.  He also just started the 45 minute nap thingy about a week and a half ago.  I've been consistently doing the wake to sleep method and I think I'm getting some progress...  you should check out the 45 minute nap support thread too!

Hi there. At 12 weeks we started having similar issues, starting getting shorter naps and dd was getting harder to put down. We had been doing great on 3 hour EASY and were so on guard against overtiredness that we didn't realize we were suddenly dealing with undertiredness, since she could handle longer A times. However, she wasn't ready for 4-hour EASY until closer to 4 months.

In order to get to 4 hour EASY, A times *and* naps have to extend--2 hours is a long A time for 2.5 months, and naps longer than 2 hours (which might be difficult to achieve anyway) could cut into night sleep. If you work on gradually extending A times, the naps should fall into place on their own and he'll get to 4 hour EASY when he's ready. :)
