With reflux you want to steer clear of apples  ;) and acidic fruits . If you want to get the fruits in her then mix with savoury  :) these kids love the things we would turn our noses up at . DS loved prunes , I will not eat them . When his reflux was bad we mixed yogurt with his dinner  :P

Are you giving them as puree? My LO wouldn't eat fruit as a puree but will eat them as finger foods. We started with things like peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots, he sucked the flesh off the skin first then began eating the skin too. I used to cut them into quarters/eighths - bits big enough to hold in his hand.

Revolting mixtures go down well here too - only way to get the savoury in is to alternate spoonfuls of yogurt/savoury

We started at about 6/7 months, we did a sort of modified baby led weaning. Basically if they have the dexterity to pick up something and get it to their mouths they have the oral skills to cope with it - within reason of course! There is a thread in the Eat section and if I knew how to I'd post a link :-[!

BLW FAQ

Finger Food for Young Babies

Yaya, at 6 months I really wouldn't worry about dd not eating much fruit, in fact I wouldn't worry about her not eating anything because what she needs is milk, milk and more milk - the solid foods are only to introduce the concept of foods and what to do with them, and she has (literally) years to experience a wide variety of different foods. At this age where foods are just to explore and experiment with it's absolutely fine for her to have what we would consider to be a bland and unvaried diet because she doesn't need it for the nutrition so long as she's having all that lovely milk!

Over the next 6 months you can very slowly introduce new foods until she's had a go with a lot of the foods she will be expected to eat as part of her diet as she grows up, but I would encourage you to take the pressure of you both and trust dd if she's telling you she's not hungry, or isn't ready for certain foods - the BLW approach suggests that babies innately know what is healthy/unhealthy for them to eat (in terms of risk and nutrition) so perhaps just go with it?

Hope this reassures you a bit?

Ax

Yaya,

Is the milk thing about her reflux? I apologise for not knowing the rest of your story, I don't get much time to explore the other forums :-[!

Dd1 had reflux, and when she was in the SCBU they mixed a special thickener called Thick & Easy into her EBM before giving it to her. We carried on with it, prescribed by our GP, on discharge and found that it really helped with her pain (the meds did nothing ::)) and allowed us to continue bf (we gave a small amount mixed with EBM before every bf). I think it worked by setting the milk as it entered her tummy. If you google it, you can find it, and could ask your GP about it :)

Other parents have tried using cereal in the same way, giving a bit before the milk feed kind of like a medication rather than an introduction of solid foods, thinking about solid foods as a separate thing to this pre-milk medication/food mixture.

At 6 months your lo is really only starting her solid food journey, there is no rush for her to have variety, so if you can find even just a couple of things she does like, as purees or finger foods, or a mixture of the 2, that's fine, but try to separate solid food meals from any food you give like a medication to help with the reflux. Try to think of the milk feeds as the Eat in EASY, and the solid foods as an Activity. At 6 months she might only have solid foods once a day (breakfast), some babies don't have any until 7 months, especially with BLW, and it doesn't matter how much she actually swallows, it's all just about exploration.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, it you want to encourage dd to eat something to aid the reflux/milk issue, don't confuse that with introducing solids - got there in the end! :)

Sorry about the waffle!

Mango, papaya and starfruit are the least allergenic fruits, maybe you could try those? Avocado and banana are both recommended for very young babies. if you are worried about constipation, melons and really black (ripe) bananas work well.

You may want to look at different reasons for her refusing milk: allergies to foods in your diet (my babies were allergic to tomatoes, milk, citrus, yeast, and onions) or dysphagia for example.

Hi guys, sorr about the dealy. Yes the refusal is food related to the reflux which turned out to be flaring up pretty bad. We have increased dose of meds and shes doing much better, eats her solid lunch pretty enthusiastically :) Not too keen of fruit at all still  :-\  seems to hate apple pear peach but likes apricot and banana..well I say likes, I mean doesnt hate LOL
I am not overly concerned but do want her to have a balanced meal as she's relying on solids mostly for substinance so want a balanced meal. Re the milk, it is supposed to be main source of food till 12 months but in both my babies' cases we are an  exception! With lots of milk related prob, bottle phobia, food aversion etc...

Just thought of this...both of my kids were diagnosed with reflux. Emily was allergic to apples and could not tolerate them in my diet or hers until she was 3. Jake could not tolerate pears or apples until about 7.5 months. Peaches worked well for Jake. Emily was allergic to every fruit I tried until she was about 15-18 months. :'(

I have seen baby foods with egg yolks mixed in. That would help your nutrition problem (a nutrtionist told me that eggs have every essential nutrient your body needs except one amino acid and vit c, I would think they would def help a baby who doersn't tolerate much milk) as well as give a savory flavor. You could boil the egg, remove the yolk and mix it in. Amaranth and Monavie juice also have a lot of nutrients she coiuld be missing. The latter was prescribed for Jake. Catalope broccoli and potatoes are good sources of vit c. HTH some
