Does this sound like a growth spurt or low supply?
« on: August 27, 2010, 21:39:23 pm »
Last Sunday DS started nursing a LOT more and off both sides. He also had much shorter naps and woke a bit more at night. He seems less content. He still has a lot of wet diapers. But my breasts also don't feel as full now. I've been pumping about 5 OZ in the AM and lately only getting 3. However, he's been waking more at night. I am really not sure what to think. How do you tell if it's a growth spurt or sudden dip in supply? He also gets one bottle a day (for practice and Daddy time). He used to struggle to take 3 OZ but now he's downing 5 OZ in minutes. Is weight going to be my only determining factor? Also, have any of you noticed that your breasts become softer? Or is that a sign that my supply is down a bit?

The behaviour that you're describing does sound like a growth spurt - waking more frequently at night, wanting to feed more frequently during the day, taking more per feed (at the bottle, for example).  It doesn't *sound* like a sudden dip in supply to me, especially at this young age.  I think that you pumping less in the morning has more to do with the more frequent night feeds than a reduction in your milk supply.
Here's a link with more information on growth spurts and how to work through them:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=66001.0

Growth spurts usually last about 2-5 days, up to a week or so, and the best way through them is to feed, feed, feed.  Also, if your supply is dipping a bit, the best way to increase it is to feed, feed, feed, so either way you're on the right track ;)  Here's a link on low milk supply for you too:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=65905.0

Julie.  I remember you felt you had low supply with Lucas, and that you ended up having to bottle feed because of it.
Recently I've been doing some research for a work related project and discovered this page on KellyMom that very succinctly describes how milk production happens at the beginning of a BFing relationship. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/milkproduction.html Please note on the graph halfway down when the stage of lactogenesis 3 starts - around 3 months.  This is when the true supply & demand connection begins.  If Caleb is drinking more, you will make more.  It can take around 48 hours for supply to catch up, but it will.
What you are experiencing is totally normal.
Your breasts being softer is another sign of your supply now being driven by milk removal and not hormonal.
