toddler sleep problem
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:04:17 am »
can anyone give me some ideas on what to do with my little miss. She is a few wks off turning two and she was going to bed really well we would do our routine pop her in her cot and off she would go to sleep. But then she got sick and we had holidays away at the same time and now she is screaming for us and is taking any where from 1/2hour to 21/2 hours for her to go to sleep. Her day sleeps are the same hassel she stands up and just cries.

I have tried sitting in with her with my hand on her back and sometimes she will go off to sleep but like tonight she just mucked around so much i got sick of it and then did the walk in and walk out routine and eventually she wore herself out and went to sleep 2 hours after her normal sleep time. I want to be consistent so she and I know what we are doing. Surely she is not ready to drop the day sleep yet?? Any advice would be appreciated

It is not likely she is ready to drop her nap yet.  You probably just need to get back on track.

I think WIWO is the best option since she has slept well before, but you want to rule out any kind of discomfort first.  Could she be teething?

My DS1 went through some sleep regression around the same age.  For us it was mostly developmental.  A lot of LOs have developmental leaps around birthdays and half birthdays that can affect sleep, but it does settle.  If she is learning new words and her language/comprehension is improving, that could be making it hard for her to fall asleep.  It's all totally normal.

How about you post your routine and we'll have a look.  :)

great thanks for the feedback. This is our routine:

6.15 she wakes up
6.45 breakfast
7.00ish she has free play
7.30 is inside play with me so we do painting, threading etc
8.45 Morning Tea
9.15 Outside play
10.30 we come inside and she has free play inside whilst get lunch ready
11.00 lunch
11.30 we read two books, have a cuddle then bedtime
this is when the fun begins she screams when i go and will not lie down. I've tried showing her with dolls what she needs to do but they normally get thrown out once i leave in anger. Actually today she stop screaming after 5 mins and is currently playing on her bed beats the constent screaming any way. How long do I do wiwo at this age? I find if she is not asleep by 1pm it mucks the night time sleep up to.
1.30 she wakes (this is if she went to sleep at 12)
1.45 drink and fruit
2.00 play either out or in
3.30 afternoon tea
3.45 play inside
5.30 dinner
6.00 shower
6.30 two books, bottle and kiss to bed
and then the fun begins again well lately it has :(
any advice would be great

oh forgot to say i don't think it's teeth it isnt a discomfort cry and yes she has just started to say alot more words so yes that makes sense what you said about it being developmental to :)

my dd is about the same age and is starting to stretch out her A times a bit.  i wonder if she needs a bit more A time?

we do:
6:30-7 awake
12:30 or 1 nap until 2 or 2:30 (between 1.5 and 2 hours of nap, occasionally longer)
7:30 bedtime

i also think wiwo is the  way to go and she will get back on track quickly since she was a good sleeper before.
