3 month old, only able to stay awake for one hour
« on: November 09, 2012, 22:45:58 pm »
Hi,
I have a 3 month old who can't stay awake more than an hour before getting tired. Is this normal? His schedule is as follows:
E-7am
A-
S-745-8am
Y- sometimes he will sleep 45 minutes, sometimes he will sleep 2 hours, there is no real pattern to my little guy. Usually it's between 45min- and two hours

E-10am
A
S-11am, usually about 30 mins?
Y- I usually go for a walk at this time and he will sleep again in the bjorn

E-1pm
A
S-2pm, usually again about 45 mins-1 hour
Y-

E-4pm
A
S-5pm, 30 minutes max
Y- I bathe him and get him in Pjs, etc at this time for a bedtime routine

E-630pm He never lasts until 7 after his bath. He's cranky and wiped out after his bath
A
S-700pm put to bed, usually asleep by 730
Y-

He is exclusively breast fed and is my first baby. I have trained him to fall asleep on his own with a little suck of my pinky finger while we rock in the chair to soothe him until his eyes get heavy. I follow the sleep cues and he just seems to like his sleep. Is this normal for a 3 month old?

The average A time at this age would be around 1hr20-30, but it's quite common for LOs to like a shorter first A time. I would think the 45 min naps might be UT though - is there a difference in the night length before the shorter first naps compared with the longer ones?

What do you do if he wakes from the first nap at 8.45 - is next nap still at 11? He'd probably be quite OT by then. I wonder if sometimes he's OT for that one (after a short first nap) and sometimes UT (after a 2hr first nap). I would go by A times rather than nap times.

My LO at this age needed me to push her A times for her gently - she would show sleepy cues when she was used to having a nap, or when she needed a change of scene, and would go down easily, but would wake UT after 45 mins or so. So I would have to go by the clock and gently stretch out her A time for 15 mins for a few days, until she got used to it. So if LO has had a good previous nap and is showing tired signs at an hour, I would try a change of scene for 15 mins, something low-key, and aim for an A time of closer to 1hr30 to try and get some consistent length naps. What do you think?

Thanks for your advice. Last night sucked. I tried to
Make his dreamfeed later and set my alarm for
1045... Well he woke up at 1040 and then
Wouldn't settle until 1am!! Thn he woke at 2am
To feed, then 530 to feed, then I woke him at
7 to start the day.
This morning he went down at 815 and laid
Awake in bed crying for a bit (not real crying but
Making cries here and there. I left him and
He fell asleep by 830 and slept until 920.
Then for his second nap I took your advice
And when he showed his sleepy signs I kept
Him up for an extra 20 mins. He went down
So fast and I didn't even have to
let him suck my pinky.
(which he likes to do to soothe before bed
) So I fed at 10am, I extended his awake time
To 1125 and he napped for 1.5 hours. I will try that
Again at his next nap time. He still goes down four
Times in the day. That's normal according to
The book I guess but is it for a 3 month old
To nap 4 times at 1.5 hours? To answer your
Question there is no difference at night to whether
The first nap is 30 mins or 2 hours which is
Strange. Perhaps less naps throughout the day
The day before? And I he wakes at 845 I usually
Take him for a walk in the bjorn and he sleeps
Again or I put him down a little earlier if he's
Really tired (typing this on iPhone so excuse
All the not needed capitals!)
Did you do the dreamfeed?
