I hate that belly pooch too!  There was a huge blow up here in Santa Cruz, CA a couple of years ago when a very popular ice cream/candy store asked a nursing mother to leave (or something like that...)  People went nuts!  It's very liberal here, which was a blessing when my ds was a complete nursing spaz and just couldn't seem to get latched on.  It's so easy now that he's a pro....

One confession, I did see a mom nursing her 2-3 year old the other day while standing in line and ordering a sandwich at a restaurant... that struck me as a little weird.  I just couldn't do that, I guess.  I'm not coordinated enough for one!

I have to agree about the whole tummy-exposure thing!!  I hate that bit, so I just use a blanket/cloth to cover that!  I guess those bf'ing shirts would be a good investment for me!!

I too tend to bf in those family room things at malls etc, but that isn't always an option.  So if my baby needs feeding then I feed her where ever we are.  Well, that's not strictly true - I generally know when she'll need feeding, and will time my trips etc around that as much as possible, so that we're at least somewhere where I can sit down.  I am not exactly comfortable flashing my wobbly bits about in public, but I do what needs to be done for my baby.   People do not need to stare/look if they don't want to see a flash of boob/nipple, and it's just ridiculous that people think it should not be allowed!!

i've never bf in public before. once at the mall, i attempted to bf in on a couch in the macy's bathroom. i made the the mistake of "asking" the woman next to me if she minded. she said that she did- she did not want me to breast feed in front of her. so i felt stupid and got up and left- i ended up feeing dd in a fitting room.  looking back i should have just bf in front of her. she was just rude! but i guess i am just still all new to this and a bit uncomfortable with nursing in front of people....

bethann - that's rough. My experience would tell me that woman was the exception and not the rule. She might have sense your anxiety and perhaps had her own issues. Your baby needs to feed - end of story. Throughout history babies have latched on as women have got on with their lives - it's only comparatively recently our culture has got funny. And it is only a few bits of the world where people feel awkward. I once saw a photo on a breastfeeding advocacy site (I wish I could find it) where a woman in a crowd was breastfeeding a toddler while talking to her nation's president. She was from a country in Central America - Venezuela or Guatemala. He looked completely relaxed and she was too. Can you imagine someone chatting to Bush or Blair in that situation?

Surely if they thought about it most people would prefer to see a baby against a woman's body if they choose to look that way, than listen to a crying baby, however 'yucky' public breastfeeding might seem.

The thing that makes me so angry is that no one seems to have any problem with scantily clad boobs selling everything from beer to fast food on our TV advertisements, but a boob nursing a baby is offensive!?!  That is just plain wrong.  And women who claim they are "uncomfortable" with it make me the most angry.  Now, for sure, my views have changed A LOT on this since having and nursing my own baby, but really, when I was younger and maybe a bit embarassed, I would have just LOOKED AWAY!!!  Babies need to eat, for heaven's sake!

I haven't ever received any negative comments, but I do live in California, and I don't nurse my toddler in public (except on airplanes).  Not because I'm against it, but because my DD only nurses first thing in the morning and at bedtime.  So there's just no need.  But to ask a mother of an infant to please go nurse in private (in the bathroom, no less) is ludicrous!  I'd ask them if they's like to eat in the bathroom.  Probably not, right?  Then why do they think my baby would?

Sabrina - you said you'd ask the person whether they'd like to eat in the bathroom... the response of this uneducated person on Dr Phil was something like "I didn't say wipe your breast across the toilet seat before feeding your baby" !!!!

I did quite a bit of it in public, and never got so much as a dirty look, or not so I noticed. That was in both England and Ireland. In fact recently I accidentally flashed some builders across from our house, as I absent-mindedly stood with my top fully open, looking out my window at the house they were building across the way! Of course in public I am more discreet.
I can also say that before I did it I thought I had never seen it. Now I know I probably did, but a baby lying in its mother's arms against her tummy is not the most noticeable thing put me in the world.
I was once somewhat surprised when my then 6 week old needed to be fed at a paediatrics out-patients clinic. When she saw me a nurse put me into a room by myself. It was clearly for my benefit, my privacy, but I didn't care, and I'm sure the other new parents didn't either.

I feed my 5 month old daughter when she is hungry regardless if I'm in public or not. I carry a recieving blanket with me to cover up with more because she likes to look at everything, but still tries to nurse while turning her head!  :P OUCH!

I live in CA and some people are INCREDIABLY ignorant about breast feeding! I mean SERIOUSLY a person sees far less breats when I'm feeding than if i was wearing, say, a push up bra and a low cut shirt. It's "OK" if I;m exposing my breasts for men to oggle them, but if I'm using them for their PURPOSE it's obscene??????  >:( Don't even get me started! I will be up on my soap box for days!
