OMG I am fuming!!!
« on: May 16, 2006, 01:20:46 am »
This might be the wrong place for this... but I am watching an episode of Dr Phil (probably old) that is about breastfeeding in public (in USA).  There is some woman on there that is just being sooooo stupid and is totally against bf'ing in public.  She is equating bf'ing in public to all sorts of strange things... and I am just wild!!!!!!!!!!!  I wish I could ring up and say what I think to her, but can't!!!  Hopefully later on in the programme Dr Phil will put her in her place, but at the moment he doesn't seem to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Aaaaargh!!  Sorry but I am just so wild!!!!

Chalk it up to stupid people. I once had a friend (notice the past tense!) that said to me she hates to see women bf in public in the mall, especially in the food court, and that bfing should be taken into the bathroom (of all places). I got pretty ticked with her and asked her why she had the right to eat in public and a baby didn't.

Sorry... I have calmed down now!!  Turns out it was only about 10min of the hour long programme.  Dr Phil didn't say too much either unfortunately...

I just couldn't understand how this person thought that what she was saying was making sense!!

I'm quite vocal about my opinions on this matter as well.

I am happy I didn't see the episode cuz I'm sure I would have felt exactly the same way!!!

I would be yelling at the TV. I nurse in public...deal with it! Nursed LO during Shamu show at Sea World on Sunday...and no one noticed!

I so know what you mean. In Scotland they have made a law that you can't stop a women from breast feeding in public / ask her to leave etc. I don't know why we can't do the same in England.

Now I hope I am not being offensive here but what drives me completely mad is women that sit out in public and don't cover up a bit because it doesn't help the cause of women that do want to feed discretly. When I was in McDonalds today some women was sitting there with her whole boob exposed and I didn't feel that comfortable with that I have to say. I just hope some young lady didn't see that and think that is how exposed you have to be to breast feed.

Not sure if you are following me.

I must confess that in my younger years, I too wasn't so keen on public breastfeeding.
But as I matured, even before having my own baby, I realized that babies have a right to eat just as much as adults do!

I nurse in public, I try to be as discreet as possible, although LO hates being covered up!  ::)
Actually, I nurse Mateo in the back row at church... nobody has a problem with this at all, as a matter of fact, it was one of the senior church members that suggested I do that rather than having to run up to the nursery!

Hopefully, with time, the ignorance regarding our babies' right to eat will be a thought of the past.

Hmmm, I nurse my 27 month old dd in public if I want to. Obviously, she doesn't need to nurse for nutritional reasons but I do accomodate her sometimes if I feel like it. It has to do a lot with the place we are in, we have some favorite spots where there are not many people and it is quiet and comfortable for us to nurse. But I did also nurse her on the plane with a stranger next to us, he didn't notice anything. I did nurse in Barnes&Noble, in the SeaWorld and many local parks. I don't cover up but I mastered a technique of getting her latched on immediately and under my shirt so nothing shows when she nurses, I guess, nobody can actually see what is going on except those who nursed their toddlers themselves.  We were a few days ago in Laguna Beach, and the beach was very crowded, Anna didn't nurse for many many hours so we sat at a far bench. While she was nursing there were hundreds of people passing by, nobody even looked up, only one woman looked at me with an emphatic smile.

Thank God for the family rooms at the malls here in Canada.  They don't have these rooms where I grew up and I asked one mum what she does when she's in public with her lo.  SHe said that she gives FORMULA!!  Geez!!!
Blessed beyond measure.

When my baby wants to eat, I try to find some quiet place to sit for myself use small blanket and nurse. This is way better than let my LO cry. There will be plenty of people who also look at you strangely , when you baby crays .

Yeah, I still just can't understand what this woman on Dr Phil was going on about... I am sure I have seen many more babies being breastfed than she has (she was single without children) and I don't sit and stare to notice the flash of nipple that there might be before the baby latches on, that might make someone uncomfortable.  And as many of you have pointed out, once the baby is actually feeding, there is nothing to see... it often looks like the baby's asleep.

I didn't see the very beginning of the article on Dr Phil, but I noticed that they were talking about women being fined  :o for bf'ing in public ('indecent exposure') or some such thing!!!!!!!!

When I was still breastfeeding I was the one who wasn't comfortable with it  :-[

I don't like exposing any of my body in public, funny enough because in East Germany nudity on the beach was cultural standard.
I didn't like nursing in public because I wasn't happy with the shape of my breast and the rest of my body. So I didn't do it. DS also really wanted quietness and calmness when he was nursing so there was no way anyway... I actually either went to completely lonely places (in Scotland) or to nursing rooms (in Germany). But two days ago I saw a young women nursing a newborn in the middle of the path where people go to their planes, LOL. They seemed both quite happy though, it looked abit like the LO couldn't wait another minute!

I don't often nurse Sam in public. On holiday I did on airplanes and trains but here at home I can't remember the last time. Because he doesn't feed much now it rarely crops up when he's out of the house. Thinking it about it though I was never concerned about a flash of boob ( I figured a baby covers more than bikini) but more about a longer flash of wobbly tummy hunched over - that's a bit sad, isn't it?
