Need longer time between feeds?
« on: August 20, 2007, 16:48:47 pm »
Hello,
I have a 7 week old ds and since yesterday has been quite fussy at the bottle. It seems at the 3 hour mark of easy he is just hungry enough to take 2-3 ounces then fusses at the bottle as if he doesn't want anymore (this morning he was hungry and took 6, but the second feed I was lucky to get 4 into him). I burp him, change position, etc and he is happy when off the bottle but as soon as I try to feed him more he gets upset. He is sleeping well at night, sometimes having one feed sometimes two between 7pm-7:30am with no df. Before yesterday he was doing 3 hourly feeds from 7:30 am until bedtime around 7pm taking 4.5-6 ounces. He weighs approx.13-14 pounds as per my scale (haven't had an official weigh in at midwives since 4 weeks). I don't think it is reflux as he is not fussing otherwise and is quite a happy little when awake. Anyone with any input? I have been thinking maybe to increase the time between feeds as he just doesn't seem hungry at 3 hours anymore. Anyone experience this so young? Sarah

Hi Sarah,

What size teat are you using?  Do you think your lo cold be bored with the flow, and this is why he is fussing?

I would recommend changing the teat size first to see if this makes any difference before  increasing the time between feeds.  He does seem a bit young to go 3.5 hours between a feed, although it has been known to happen.

Let us know how you get on with the next size up teat.

Hi Sarah, I'm stalking you  :P ;D ;)  Zander is breastfed (OMG did I just write that, of course he's not, hasn't been for over a year - I'll try again!).  Nate is breastfed and not hungry at the 3 hour mark, he's 13lb 8oz and 8 weeks old and needs at least 3.5 hours between feeds to take a decent amount.  I know this is a bottle feeding question but there you go!

Tom Tom's Mum-the teat size is the faster flowing of the playtex avance bottle.
Kelly-How does your routine look with the 3.5 hour feeds? Could you give me an idea? TIA Sarah

Hi Sarah

He feeds at the following times:

7.30am
11am (sometimes a little earlier if he's not fed well at 7.30 due to waking at 5/6 for a feed)
2.30pm
6pm
10/11pm

As you know I don't try to get him back to sleep in the morning when he wakes after 45 minutes to 1 hour so he has a max of 1 hour some time between 8.30 and 9, sometimes a little catnap in the living room an hour after waking but either way a 2-3 hour nap at 11.30/12 and then 1 or 2 more catnaps in the afternoon with bed at about 6.30.
