Avent bottles
« on: August 26, 2007, 01:09:02 am »
We just started using Avent bottles and I was hoping to get some feedback on how people find them. Do you like/ dislike them? And why? I have never used them before and ds is always needed to be burped ALOT after each feed. Trying to figure out if its the bottle or formula or maybe something else. Thanks Tracey

We used Dr. Brown bottles for first child. Even though they say they are the best, they did nothing for our first child who had terrible terrible colic and were very hard to clean. However, I still hear it's the best.

Funny thing, I'm using the Avent Naturally bottles. We are having some gas problems and she is hard to burp at times. Spits up a little here and there and once in a while BIG spit up. But I'm still trying to feel her out so we'll have to see.

Posted on the other question, but I dropped a load on Avent bottles.  They were the rage here and I HAD to have them.  Within a week, I'd packed them away and switched to the Playtex Disposable Drop-In Liner system.  Not so great for the environment, but a total cinch to clean comparatively and the liners collapse as they eat (and you can squeeze the excess air out before they start) and it was a HUGE, HUGE help.  I was so sick about spending that money on the Avent bottles, but more relieved that we'd found something that cut out a ton of gas for DD.

More detail:  When we first brought DD home from the hospital, you could hear DD fart throughout our entire house.  Not joking, she had that much gas and it was that loud when we used Avent bottles.  How can that feel for a tiny little newborn?  It stopped when we used the Playtex ones.  Then at 12WO when she still wasn't sleeping, was a total crankpot we tried Nestle Good Starts.  I was reluctant cuz I'd felt like we'd tried everything.  What would this formula do?  Within 24 hours, she was easier to put to sleep (still fussed but not hours like she had) and she slept longer than 20 minutes for the first time in her life (okay, after that hazy newborn period wore off).  Then with 48 hours of switching to GS, she slept for over an hour. Again, the first time EVER in her life.  I'm not kidding when I say that we were up with her 2-3 times an hour, all night long.  She's still not a great sleeper but those early days...ick!  Those two changes were a life-saver for me.

We did the same as the pp, and when we switched to the drop-ins there was a huge improvement in gas. I also found with the Avent bottles they tended to leak quite often and were a huge pain to clean.

I loved avent bottles for a while, the teats always seemed just the right flow when I thickened DD's milk, but the wind problems did not help even though they had the anti colic valve.  I LOVE dr browns, dd still on them, expensive and fiddly but worth it lol!

so far the avent bottles seems to be ok but i do agree a little hard to clean.  I find the nipple a little hard compared to some out there but cuz i had invested so much $$ in avent that i refused anything to try anything else.

I'm embarrassed to say how much I spent on the Avent bottles!  I know they've worked wonders for others, just not for us!

I would like to speak up for poor old Avent- I love love love their bottles and still use them at almost 20mo! I have never found them leaky or hard to clean, dd has never had any gas. My friend recommended them to me as she loved them and I can see why!  ;D

Oh yeah...the leaking thing.  Could have been operator error, but I bought more Avent when we went to sippy cups and had those things leak all over everything I own - car, bed, couches, carpet...Threw them out in disgust!  I do know that with one of the styles that I bought, it WAS operator error.  Neither DH and I could get the spout in properly to make a complete seal.  A couple of times when DD was drinking (and playing with) her milk, it popped out completely drenching everything!

As I said, I know they've worked for others, but just not a fit for us!

Just fed noah with a gerber bottle and nuk nipple. He fed without any sputtering and did a nice burp at the end. The best part is he's sitting contently on me and is almost asleep!!!
My girlfriend uses avent and loves them so I guess it just depends on the baby.I myself have decided to switch.
thanks for all your imput!

hi. i've used Avent with both my girls.  my DD1 had colic for 6 weeks and i dont know if swapping to another bottle system would have made a difference.  I have found they do leak at times. but it is usually when i have sprinkled powder accidentally on the rim of the bottle, so the seal is not so tight.

I used Avent bottles on both girls, even though I mostly breastfed. I really liked them. We don't have Playtex here and Dr. Browns I only found out we had much later.
I didn't have any leaking problems and I found them really easy to clean. Because I could hear the air through the valve, I think the girls were ok with gas (they weren't colicky either). I guess it really is a question of fit!

Hi

We use Avent here and they are fine - sometimes they leak a little and I have to re-twist the top on again, but DD has never had any gas at all.

DD has been very happy using them and so have I.
