Sudden Screaming
« on: August 28, 2007, 00:07:02 am »
Hi,

My son has been pretty good at going to sleep for the last six months or so, both at nap time and at bed time. Recently he has started SCRAMING - really SCREAMING - when we put him down for both nap and more so at night. We rock him to sleep and put him down and when we put him down he goes nuts. This is the same technique we had always used. Here is our EASY schedule.

A - 7:30am (we have to wake him up or else he will always sleep until 8:30am)
Breakfast - 7:45/8a
Snack - 10am
Lunch - noon
Nap - 1/1:30 - 3pm
Snack - 3:30pm
Dinner - 5pm
Wind down & bath - 6:30
Bed - 7pm

Please help!
Thank you so much, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Maybe I missed it but how old is your son? Do you think his A time might be a little long (5.5 - 6 hrs.) before nap and a big short (4) before bedtime? I'm not sure how long he's been on this schedule, and every lo is different, but just wondering if the timing might be an issue.

My son is 19 mo and usually he won't go down for a nap before 1pm because he isn't sleepy enough. But I suppose I could give it a try.

Regarding the nightlight - hummm... I am not sure? He likes to go into his closet alone in the dark and play peek-a-boo so I don't think he is afraid of the dark, but I could be wroing. His room is quite dark.

At 19 mos, my DD was also doing 5.5 - 6 hrs. before naptime and didn't seem sleepy before that too. Does he seem really sleepy before bedtime after a shorter A time? It's so hard to tell sometimes whether they're overtired or not tired enough!  ::)

At night he seems to be screaming more for us and calling for my husband a bit. Could it be seperation anxiety? If so, what do I do. We have always been so good about saying goodbye before we go anywhere and he always says good bye. He may be sad to see my husband go in the am to work but he waves and rebounds. But he seems to be so upset at bedtime. It is brutal to listen to him scream.

Could be SA, but a lot of times with that you would be noticing more clinginess during the day too. When we had similar problems with DD around 16 mos. (screaming when we laid her down for naps and bedtime), we ended up doing WI/WO. DD had been putting herself to sleep independently before that though. When you say you rock your son to sleep, is he fully asleep when you lay him down or just drowsy? If he's just drowsy and has been putting himself to sleep by himself previously, maybe WI/WO would work for you too. If he's usually asleep when you lay him down, maybe you could try Gradual Withdrawal. Here is a link from the FAQ section for more info. HTH  :)

Do you think the rocking is a prop??? I got a night light for my 2.5yo - she has just showed me signs of being scared in the dark... so thats not a bad idea....

I also agree that he probably needs more A time after nap. My dd used to wake from nap at 2pm & go to bed at 7 (asleep by 7.30pm) so I think he might need a later bedtime (if he wakes at 7.30am). He really doesn't need 12+hrs at night... most need 11 & 1.5-2hr nap. Try shifting his bedtime hour 30mins later next few days to see if the screaming will get better.

Otherwise I would do wi/wo & tbh I would stop the rocking.... he is past the rocking age & needs to go down for nap & bedtime awake...

Layla :)
