8 weeks- suddenly wakes after just falling asleep, over and over
« on: September 06, 2007, 19:52:45 pm »
My son has always had a hard time falling asleep. He goes down well and falls asleep (stage 3). As he falls into a deeper sleep about 15-20 minutes later he begins to breathe heavily and uncoordinated, his eyelids flutter, his face twitches making a bunch of facial expressions and he makes noises such as moaning. after a couple of minutes of this, his eyes open wide all of a sudden and his body jolts throwing his arms in the air and waking him up completely. I then have to start from the beginning again.

Until now I dealt with this by holding him while he goes to sleep, which has turned into rocking or bouncing him to sleep or going for a walk or car ride to get him to sleep. If he falls asleep in my arms, I cannot put him down without waking him.

He is now 8 weeks old and I am trying the ABC 3 day magic approach, but I am running into the same problem where he goes to sleep and 15-20 minutes later he is up. This goes on for hours, It took me over three hours to get him to sleep last night. He completely skipped his first nap this morning after trying for 2 hours before he needed to eat again. For his next nap, he was so overtired he he couldn't settle down without me Shhing and Patting, and he fell asleep on me. After putting him down in his crib,he was up 15 minutes later.

I have always swaddled him, he likes it but it doesn't solve my problem (he gets his hands loose with no problem now). And I do not go into his room until he cries.

Please Help

Oh my...i am so glad i am not alone. My son is 8 weeks as well and he hasnt been a good sleeper since almost day 1.In the first week he was home from the hospital he slept so so...3 hours at a time and then a couple nights he made it to 4 hours. But it all went crazy after that.He would barely sleep during the day (20 minute cat naps 2-4 times a day) and at night it was 2 hours at a time maximum.
He was/is waking out of a deep sleep crying and with jolts and his arms in the air....like something is waking him.I can sometimes calm him by patting his back and sometimes i pick him up but i have been putting him back down as soon as he quiets down. Also he seem stuffed up and not breathing clearly...like he has a cold or something.I only notice the stuffy breathing at night when he lies flat.If he falls asleep in his car seat or his swing he is fine but again doesnt sleep any longer then an hour or 2.He is bottle fed and drinks 5-5 1/2 oz per feeding(every 3-4 hours)so i didnt really think he was hungry.I have tried swings, chairs that vibrate, drives in the car, stroller rides and a soother and nothing seems to help.Any suggestions at this point would be greatly welcomed.

Thank You
Christina

Anyone who reads my posts is going to think I am a broken record.

Ladies, check out this website for sleep issues.  I think you will see that some of what you're describing is normal.  Babies 8 weeks old are still rather immature when it comes to sleep.  http://www.familysleep.com/index.html
Check out the part of the website that says "Age and Needs."

Also, this book has been incredibly helpful to me regarding what babies need when it comes to sleep.  http://www.amazon.com/Healthy-Sleep-Habits-Happy-Child/dp/0449004023

Okay, the twitching and facial expressions sound like the normal "jerks" Tracy talks about, and we've all seen - it's the baby going through REM sleep and cycling into a lighter sleep phase.  If he is overtired he will have a hard time passing through this transition without waking.

This is what swaddling is for - do you swaddle?  Many babies complain about it at first, but it really does help.

Have you tried Wake to Sleep (called W2S)?  There are threads about it on the Sleep board, basically you time when this is happening, and give him a little stir a few minutes before he would jerk awake, this will bump him into the next sleep cycle.  I have never done that technique, but it works for some.

I have done the second type of Wake to Sleep, and it worked well.  You time when the baby will likely jerk awake, and a couple of minutes before that you sit by the crib  and when he stirs, you put your hands on him and put light pressure along his body (just the weight of your arms will do it, not pushing down hard or anything).  This will keep those jerks from being so big and startling him awake.

Now, SugarKiss, the snuffly breathing and the fact that your lo sleeps better with head elevated   suggests there may be a reflux issue.  There is a reflux board, you might check it out to see if he has other symptoms.

I highly recommend the Miracle Blanket for swaddling.  It is very difficult for them to get out of, though my little Houdini can get her arms out after a night of inch-worming around the crib, which does finally loosen the swaddle.

In addition to sticking around for the jolts and helping them through with pressure, a good, tight swaddle does wonders.

But, as mentioned, they do grow out of it...and overstimulation leads to more jolts.  (When I didn't know better, my LO once had 17 jolts before settling down! :-[

Hi there,

here is a link to a swaddling teqnique called the aussie swaddle. I know a lot of parents on here have found it useful and I think it is hard for babies to get their arms out.
