Regressing
« on: September 20, 2007, 16:35:12 pm »
My lo wanted immediately wanted to ditch the baby food and eat independently as soon as I started giving her finger foods. Now it seems like she is slowly turning down everything. All meat, veggies, even some grains. I've tried a couple of leftover jars of totally pureed baby food (stage 3 or anything with texture no way) and she'll eat those, but would it be a bad idea to regress to baby food now. I'm worried about her not getting enough nutrients. We have our 15 mo appointment with our ped. next week, but until then...any suggestions or similar experiences?

Haven't got too much help I'm afraid other than Dominic also went off finger foods for a while but it was because he was learning how to spoon feed himself so wanted to eat everything off a spoon and wouldn't pick anything up with his hands (or let me spoonfeed him)
That lasted a few weeks but now he will eat f foods again but I still try and give him a mix of 'spoon foods' and f foods so he can practice both.

Does she refuse lumpy food altogether, or does she spit it out/gag on it etc? I wouldn't regress back to stage 1 food personally, what about giving her a mix of f foods and 'spoon foods' and giving her a spoon to see if she'll feed herself lumpy stuff. You could also have a spoon to try and get the occasional mouthful in.

I wouldn't regress either. She was doing well with finger foods, so just keep presenting them and if she refuses, she refuses. Many LOs go through periods where they refuse for a variety of reasons (teething, developmental gains, independence/control). Just stick it out and try to to make it a control battle or a big deal, and she will likely come around and start eating her finger foods again. As long as your LO is an adequate weight and generally has a healthy appetite, some variation and decreases in amount taken should pass relatively quickly. HTH

I think we're having teething issues along with her learning she can make independent choices.  She wants to be on the go all the time and doesn't want to stay put to eat. I'll keep offering the finger foods, but I'll also give her a little pureed food (which will allow me to sleep at night and make it through this new and lovely stage :))
