My LO is 6 weeks old and my doctor tells me that he should be getting up to 35 ounces by the time he is 2 months old.  That is in 3 weeks.  I can't seem to get him to take more than 2-4 ounces per bottle.  He eats 7 times a day.  I have tried a fast flow nipple and he still only takes 2-4 ounces and stops.  No coaxing will make him take more.  I am at my wits end with worry and frustration.  It is making feeding miserable for me and I'm sure for him with me constantly putting the bottle in his mouth.  I don't know what to do. He is gaining weight.  About 1 ounce a day.  He was 8lbs. 3.3 ounces at birth went home at 7lbs. 14oz.  and yesterday was 10 lbs. 3.5 ounces.  Am I just making myself crazy for nothing?  Should I be trying to get in more feeds?

Hi there!

Please don't fret sweetie!  35oz is a LOT of formula.  In fact I believe 24-32oz is what is rec.  Some take more, some take less.  Here is a link about amounts:  https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=67933.0  I personally think 20-25oz is fine, especially if baby is gaining weight steadily.  I also believe in listening to your baby and letting him guide you, as you are doing.

Are you doing EASY?  At 6w you may consider feeding every 3h during the day, tanking up before bed, doing a dreamfeeding, and then feeding as needed through the night.  I do not think you need to go crazy trying to feed him very often because often times, they will take less because their tummy never gets a chance to expand from taking a bigger feeding.

I think you should use a bottle and nipple that you and he are both comfortable with.  Burp frequently, and offer him as uch as he wants at each feeding.

It's hard to know what's best, we expect our pedi to guide us and for the most part they do.  Sometimes though I think they forget what it is like to be a first time parent, they forget that every single thing they say to us, we take as very seriously - so sometimes they may not be as supportive and understanding as they could be.

Big hugs to you, you are doing perfectly.  Sit back and enjoy this time with your new baby - it goes by so fast.  :-*

...its what you do when you get back up.

I agree with Zoey, she has given you some fantastic advice.

As long as your lo is happy, content, and gaining weight, has enough wet nappies, then you are doing perfectly fine.

Hugs to you, enjoy your new baby and try not to worry so much.  :-*

Don't worry, he's ok.  Is he making wet/dirty diapers?  My 6 month old is 17.5 pounds and has been taking about 25 ounces a day, even before we started solids.  Some babies just need less.

Yes, he is getting wet diapers.  He has a bowel movement issue so he only comes 1x/5-6 days but he isn't constipated.  The doctor said some babies on breastmilk just don't have BM's often.  Other than that, he is a really content little one.  I appreciate your info.  I will just stop the worry and enjoy him while he is little.  It doesn't last very long.   ;)

My lo is 4.5 months old and she has just barely reached 25 oz per day.  As long as he's gaining & giving wet nappies, you're fine.  I had the same problem; she is not a big eater but not all babies are.

Thanks everyone!  I will just follow his cues and see where it takes us.  I go to a Pedi GI specialist in 2 weeks to get another opinion on the Bowel Movements. Today has been an unusual day as he woke up at 8am screaming because he was so hungry. At so fast that he had a little spit up.  Had a restless 1st nap and woke at 10:40 to eat again. This time he drained a 5oz bottle.  I guess he could be going through a growth spurt.  He is a little over 6 weeks so I guess it is due.

I haven't posted in awhile but little one is doing better.  He is still eating low for his weight (about 25-28 oz/day). His bowel movements are started coming more regulary now.  He gained sufficient weight at his last check up so I'm just not going to stress anymore about what he eats.  He sleeps well and seems really happy and content during the day.  Thanks everyone for your help and info.  I appreciate it.
