how much milk at 1 year
« on: October 04, 2007, 13:32:51 pm »
my ds is currently getting 2 8oz bottles a day, how much will he need at 1 year?  how do i get him off the bottle and make sure he is getting enough, milk, iron, calcium, etc.  he loves yougart and has one a day but won't eat cheese of any kind.  he will only drink 2 oz of milk max out of a cup. so what does a 1 year old need?

I am going to move this over to the Eating for Toddlers Thread - I am sure you will get a lot more advice from there.

With regards to how much milk your lo needs at 1 - they still need about 20oz a day - but this can include milk in cereals and cooking as well as yogurts, cheeses, etc.

When my DS turned 1 he was on 2 x 8oz bottles as well as milk in his cereal and a yogurt a day.

My DS is 1 year old and has 3 bottles of 7 oz each. Actually, I'm also going to ask a follow-on question....I want to offer milk with food too but I was worried that my baby would be either too full from the food for any milk or still gulp the milk and throw up from overeating. Can anyone advise what is the normal amount of food + milk served together at 1 meal?

We always offered our DS his bottle first and then gave him his breakfast afterwards.  You could try offering your lo the lunch time milk in a sippy cup with his meal and see how well he does, and keep the two bottles in the morning and evening.

but for how long will he get the bottle in the morning and evening?
nick's mom:  For meals i give y ds his bottle first in teh morning then about 1 hr later i give him breakfast, i let him eat till his full. Then at lunch i put 2 oz of milk ( that's all he wll drink from a sippy with milk in it) and again i let him eat till he's full.  Same for dinner a sippy with millk and eating till he's full. Then the rest through out the day i have water in his sippy for him.  Then bedtime a bottle before bed.
My ped told me to just let him eat till he's ful, somedays he will eat more but not to scoop out certain amounts for him as then he will end up drinking too much milk in the day to fill the void.  IT has been going real good and less stressful at meal time for me worrying about how much he's eating or not eating.

Your lo will let you know when they are ready to drop their milk.

At around 17 months my DS started showing signs that he did not want his milk in the morning, and we kept on offering it to him, but he just refused it.  We started giving him more cereal and putting all his milk in there.

It is quite common for lo's to be a lot older when they drop the last milk, although my DS dropped his night milk at around 19 months or so - he just did not want it.  Sometimes he will ask for it and other times he would rather drink water.

thanks, that helps a lot, i won't worry so much.  it's just all you read and hear is that no more bottles after 1 year and if my ds won't drink a lot of milk in a cup then  he wouldn't get what he need, right.  so i will just let him guide me more.

ya i read it a while back and it's a good one.  I just don't know how i am going to get the bedtime routine changed as we need to start brushing his teeth.  He has 7 and working on 2 more, so i know i should be doing it but if i brush after his bottle it will just rally things up as he hates anyone going near his mouth, lol.  then so much for being nice and relaxed before bed

You could always offer milk first, brush teeth afterwards, and then a cuddle and story before bed - this is what we did with our DS.
