Anyone have experience with a crib tent?
« on: October 10, 2007, 17:35:46 pm »
Just wondering if these things really work/are safe.  DS is in no way ready for a toddler bed, but he's about ready to climb out of his crib.  Thoughts?....

I have one, didn't really se it much as she outgrew the urge to jump out of her cot.  You could lower the base, if it's on the lowest setting you could try to do it DIY style. Many on here have had success with this.  And put some padding on the floor to break a fall.

Please don't put a bed next to the cot. My parents did this with my brother to prevent him for hurting himself.

He got out from the crib as he did, thought he was on the floor. In the meantime he was walking on the single bed next to his crib... He kept on walking, thinking he was on the floor... Needless to say one big thump and MANY tears later, the bed was swiftly removed. I think I followed shortly after and he was moved to said single bed.

I think I mentioned to you that we used one but it was when DS was first in the crib, maybe from 3-6 months and the purpose was to keep the cats from jumping on him when he was sleeping as they were always trying to sneak in there to curl up for a nap!  We ended up getting rid of it after a while because it became a non-issue.  Have you priced them?  We could only find them one place in the city and they were close to $100 CDN.  I always thought DS would be one to try to escape his crib but nothing yet!  I think they are definitely safe, ours attached with tiny velcro loops that went around the top of the rails of the crib and it was white mesh, very light.  You could buy it, checking out the return policy, give it a trial run and return it if if doesn't work out....

My kids LOVE the tent.  Bought one for older DS when he was about 18 mos and climbed/fell out at bedtime (luckily we caught him).  Since we got the tent he's slept even better since he doesn't get stuck between the bars.  He thinks it is him own private playfort, doesn't try to get out and he's 2 1/2.  We don't even zip it.  Probably going to buy one for younger DS soon, he loves being put in his brother's crib!
Downside is a bit harder to change the sheets.  Also pricey, I think ours was about $70US.

Thanks guys!  I'm ordering 1 today.  ds has not yet tried to escape, but I know he could if he wanted to.  One thing I was wondering about...ds is a hot sleeper-always a bit sweaty.  Do these crib tents restrict the air flow at all, do you think?  We are in Florida, so it's still pretty warm here at night.

As I said, ours was a very fine, white mesh.  It seemed quite light so I am sure the air flow wasn't affected.  It also only attached over the top of the crib so that air was free to circulate through the rungs.
