GOTTA PUMP, BUT HOW????
« on: October 16, 2007, 17:50:58 pm »
Hello,

Well the time has come & I must be away from my ds for an entire day & need to pump for 3 feeds (5-8 ounces each); so WHEN do I steal this milk from my LO without ruining the otherwise super boobies in any way?!?! :o

TIA

Can I ask a few questions?

When are you going away?
How much pumping have you done so far? If so, when have you tended to do it?
Has he had a bottle yet?
What kind of pump do you have?

OK
 - I'm going away in 4 days (Sat) so I have 3 1/2 days to do so
 - I've pumped initially to get milk started (3 months ago) & pumped a bit to increase one side a month+ ago & now everything is perfect
 - He has had a bottle before & has no problems with that
 - I am using the super electric pump........

Actually, make that 2 feeds as I already have some frozen.

OK so if you have some frozen you are looking at 16 oz. Plus you do want a bit set aside for emergency (dropped bottle, travel problems so add maybe another 3 - 5oz for that.)
18-21oz
That's quite a lot in only 3.5 days :-\.
How much do you have in the freezer? Is there any way you can reduce that?

I think the trick here is going to be little and often rather than massive big pumping sessions that completely mess up the subsequent feeds and leave you with major engorgement issues on the day you are away.

Does he feed one-sided or two-sided? That's quite important. If he's one-sided you could pump during a feed on the other side.

If not I would try and pump perhaps 30 minutes after every feed but only expect 1-2oz at a time and don't go on forever. The morning would probably be your best time when you could also get a little more.

You could also consider pumping once in the night.

You may find that your supply takes some adjusting afterwards but there's no real way to avoid that. You will also need to pump while you are away if you can - at least once or twice. If you really can't just expect an adjustment period on your return.

Good Luck.

If you can get the hang of expressing by hand, it's a great way to eek out those last drops of milk that the pump can't get to. When I was stockpiling, I'd pump after feeds and hand express after that. Even super double electric pumps can't get your breasts totally empty and that's where hand expressing comes in. Sometimes I could even get an entire ounce or 2 by hand after the pump seemed to have emptied my breasts.

Max is a one sided feeder & extremely efficient & rarely feeds for more than 15 minutes on either breast; he's been like this since birth & went from 6.13 lbs & he is now 14.7 lbs @ 3 months old!

So pumping for 30 minutes might be too much; I am kind of confused, so a little at each feed??
I remember getting 5 ounces in 5 minutes before.....

No no not pumping for 30 minutes!

Begin pumping '30 minutes after a feed'. And stop when you get to a couple of oz. :)
